Reel Forecast: Experience a bit of film history, discover the worlds of Hayao Miyazaki and watch George A. Romero's Martin in 16mm!

Posted by Andrés / April 12, 2012

20120412_reelforecast.jpg(Montreal film screenings for Apr. 13-19, 2012) This last year was certainly dedicated to the appreciation of film history. Martin Scorsese's Hugo celebrated the career of Georges Méliès, and The Artist was itself an ode to the silent film. In this same vein, Stéphane Tessier and David Mayer will be re-creating an historical form of movie-watching at the Maison Brignon-dit-Lapierre (+) with an event titled Les P'tits Vues. After the turn of the century, when films were silent and inter-titles mostly English, local storytellers would often attend screenings and narrate the events of the film. These narrations were at times prepared, at times improvised. Experienced in historical narration and storytelling, Tessier and Mayer decided to give silent cinema a go. The free event is this Saturday, starting at 2pm. Films screened include shorts by Buster Keaton: The Electric House (pictured above) and The Blacksmith, and Charlie Chaplin: The Adventurer and The Immigrant. The event will be followed by a showcase of classic projectors. A must for anyone cinephile interested in film history.

If being spirited away by film is your goal, you can't miss out on Cinéma du Parc's The Animated Masterpieces of the Studio Ghibli. Of note is these are being presented in 35mm print in the original Japanese dubs with English subtitles. While not a complete retrospective of the studio nor its most representative director, Hayao Miyazaki, these animated classics are rarely shown in this form on the big screen. This week check out Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro, Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind (pictured below), The Secret World of Arrietty and Princess Mononoke. (+)

Other screenings of note:

Cinéma du Parc | The 3rd Festival du Cinema Latino-Americain de Montreal (featured in last week's Reel Forecast) continues. I erroneously highlighted the film Medianeras (Sidewalls) last week even though it really only screens this Saturday. Which really gives you no excuse to miss it a "second" time. (+) Philippe Claudel's I've Loved You For So Long, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, who won many accolades for her performance in 2008, screens tomorrow night. (+)

Cinémathèque québécoise | Also featured last week, selected episodes of Alfred Hitchock Presents continue on Friday and Saturday. (+) There is also an ongoing retrospective of French filmmaker Clade Sautet as well as contemporary Italian documentaries (+).

Rialto Theatre | On April 15th, 1912, a boat hit a slab of ice and entered the annals of maritime history. In case you didn't know, that boat was the Titanic. In celebration (memoriam?) of the 100th anniversary of the sinking, Rialto is screening the 1953 Titanic, not to be confused with the 1943 or 1997 Titanic, nor with the 1958 A Night to Remember. (+)

Blue Sunshine | Hey, guess what? Tomorrow is Friday the 13th! Anyone remember when YTV used to have those great suspense/horror kids-show marathons? Blue Sunshine isn't exactly celebrating in the same fashion, but they've got something special tomorrow evening: a 16mm print of George A. Romero's Martin! (+) And on Saturday, a fun evening of vintage Montreal rarities also on 16mm entitled Bélanger was a Madman! Jean Belanger was a film collector whose collection includes film of a circus setting up in Rosemont in 1939, old beer commercials, and other fun found footage. (+)

Chemistry teacher, Maurice Oehler, came up with the National Mole
Day idea back in the 80s. Others fall in love and create
lasting, good bonds. Regular inspection reports on each piece of
equipment are also necessary. The names of
just some of these elements will be familiar to most people and includes
elements such as oxygen; iron; helium; platinum and chlorine.

First things first, you must harden up for the time being
and avoid any yowl, pleading and begging for a girlfriend to take people back.
As most medical laboratory equipment suppliers offer recertified
devices using new appliances, research facilities surely have the convenience to buy the right
apparatus according to their budget. College chemistry is
a tough and almost intimidating course. ') All that aside, the dish's true
elegance stems most likely from its sheer simplicity: eggs, a little water or
milk or cream, and a cooking fat.
