Fantasia Film Festival Update: Two
Attention: spoilers.
Grabbers
Jon Wright's maritime creature feature Grabbers delivers exactly what audience members hope for -a boatload of laughs and some genuine chills.
The terror from the sea, an interesting blend of Kraken and Sarlac, is surprisingly well-rendered considering the low-key production vibe the film initially gives off. Other scenes requiring special effects, a severed head is of note here, were equally impressive. Hats off (heads off?) to Shaune Harrison, who also worked on Harry Potter.
Love in the Buff
Hong Kong director Pang-Ho Cheung offers his take on the modern rom com here with a well-balanced mix of idealized romance and stark realism.
This film playfully dabbles in issues many long-term couples face, such as: expectations not being met, a wandering eye and the insecurity of aging. Despite their relationship woes, you'll find yourself rooting for charismatic main characters Cherie and Jimmy.
