A Taste Of Home At Ma’s Place

Posted by MP / March 30, 2007

I admit that I may not be the most qualified judge of Caribbean food. I admit that I was led to the Holy Land of spicy and tasty, and didn’t discover it for myself. I’m just a hanger-on, a follower, and I gladly followed my wife to Ma’s Place.

Their menu talks of recipes that are traditional, going back 45 years, and although I didn’t get a chance to meet the mysterious Ma, I did get to enjoy her party-in-your-mouth spices and comforting fare.

A bus rear-ended a Volvo. All the passengers craned their necks, trying to see what happened as they were herded off. I was standing there with my camera taking a picture of the Ma’s Place sign. People looked at me as if I were an extremely timely reporter, taking photos for the morning paper, capturing their intense moment of beeping horns and splintering plastic. Their faces seemed to say, “Why, why are you taking a photo of that restaurant? We’ve just been in an accident, photograph us you fool.” The Volvo was barely damaged. Everyone was OK.

I ducked inside and ordered.

The steady stream of pick-ups made me realize that Ma’s Place is well known and well loved. Our food arrived hot and fresh, and in a flurry of flung rice, my two year old daughter gobbled up an adult size portion of fried chicken as though we had never introduced her to food before.

Chicken roti, rice and peas, and plantain were also thoroughly consumed and enjoyed.

Our dinner for three cost under $25.00 (before drinks) and that makes Ma’s Place a great choice for families. Their simple and yummy dishes will appeal to old and young alike.

Mmmm. Why oh why do I read these food reviews just before lunch. Now my mouth is watering, my stomach grumbling, and I know lunch will disappoint, because I'm not going to be at Ma's.

Aw, this was a very good post. Finding the time and actual effort to create a
really good article… but what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and don't
manage to get nearly anything done.

The culture can be very aggressive and the humor can be quite scathing, even much more than other gamedevs/publishing studios.
