Sugar High Without the Mess at Sucre Bleu

Posted by Emily / July 26, 2007

Is it possible that it can get too hot for ice cream? On really hot days, an ice cream cone can turn into a messy disaster. It starts with a few drips down the side of the cone, but before you know it you’ve got melted ice cream streaming down your forearms, dripping onto your feet and squishing between your toes. Ick! My flip-flops will never look the same.

Today my friend and I were on St. Denis looking for a sugar fix that we wouldn’t end up wearing by the time we got home, and we stopped in Sucre Bleu. It looked like a standard candy shop: brightly-coloured walls, pop music blasting, huge selection of Jelly Beans, etc. But some of its merchandise gives Sucre Bleu an advantage over the rest.

The gummy bears with strawberry and vanilla syrup swirled together were tart and creamy. Chocolate and mocha covered lentils had the perfect salty/sweet/crunchy combination and were surprisingly addictive. Even more addictive were the milk chocolate covered blueberries, which turned out to be my favourite item from my large goody bag.

The shop also had all the classics that reminded me of my preteen days when I was perpetually on a sugar high and wouldn’t be caught dead without my candy necklace. There are enough pixy sticks, Swedish Fish, Nerds and cyclone pops to satisfy the twelve-year-old in all of us.

I found myself drawn to the selection of ‘candy sticks’ which were packaged in cartoon-themed playing card boxes. I picked up a box featuring the TMNT Michelangelo wielding his lethal nunchucks. The long white ‘candy sticks’ didn’t taste very good, but my money wasn’t wasted because the box came with a free tattoo, which I now wear with pride.

Like most candy shops, Sucre Bleu offers several kinds of fudge. I only tried the raspberry-chocolate flavour, but it was much yummier than the synthetic-tasting stuff sold at the Sweet Factory. And it didn’t taste like it had been sitting around for days, unlike a lot of store-bought fudge.

My only let-down was the box of toffee I got. I’m not usually partial to toffee, and unfortunately Sucre Bleu didn’t make me a convert. But in fairness, the toffee was made by Nestle, not the shop itself.

At the end of our walk home, my friend and I were very hot, very hyper, and very satisfied. And what’s more, we’d managed to indulge our sweet-teeth without taking an ice cream bath. Hmm, but now as I look at it the phrase ‘ice cream bath’ seems strangely appealing…
Mmmmm, fudge.

Milk chocolate covered blueberries...if only I still had some.

They're not M&Ms, they're chocolate and mocha covered lentils.

Woah, i remember candy sticks! They used to be called Candy Cigarettes, but that got nixed 'cos they thought the idea of giving (fake!) cigarettes to kids was bad. Although they still have those bubblegum cigars, so I don't get that.

Great article! I'll definately stop there on my Montreal trip.

I stopped by the Crescent location during Fantasia and was very much unimpressed. But then again, it didn't seem to have half of the selection of candy you are describing so I guess a sugar fix on St. Denis is in order.

Speaking of bulk candy stores, I've always liked the one on the ground floor of the Faubourg near the bagel place and the bookstore. I don't know if it's still there or if it has been renovated into oblivion but it's worth checking out if you need to add a few pounds while walking around downtown.

You actually make it appear so easy together with your presentation but I find this topic to be really one thing that I believe I would by no means understand. It kind of feels too complicated and extremely wide for me. I'm taking a look forward for your subsequent submit, I?ll attempt to get the hold of it!

As an associate with the Cartier collection, this watch also shows the sword-shaped and blue steel hands. However, Rolex watches aren't the one ones that keep their resale value greatly. The utilization of exotic materials like pink gold, white gold and pink brilliants has earned the company the status of top luxury watchmaker. Two British pilots activated their Breitling Emergency watches transmitters after their helicopter crashed in Antarctic waters. This French luxury watchmaker continues to be utilizing the world by storm since 1847. The Oyster case eschewed the low-profile that characterized men's watches from the time and instead ushered in the era of sports watches having a masculine aesthetic and stout construction. The case is accented by the decorative bezel containing titanium screws.
