I Scream You Scream: Le Patio Bar Laitier

Posted by Kim / August 28, 2007

20070828_patio7.jpgSummer’s slowly winding down, so it’s necessary to pack all summer activities into the next few weeks. And what’s a better summer activity than yet another ice cream trip? This time, I headed down to Le Patio Bar Laitier on Mont-Royal for some warm evening treats.

First of all, the atmosphere was lovely. The little terrace that sits right on the sidewalk was filled with families, children loving every bite of their ice cream. With water bowls placed right outside for hot, thirsty animals, even the family dog has got to be happy at this place. Once inside, the line was almost long enough for me to make up my mind before having to order.

20070828_patio2.jpgSo many tubs of fantastic-sounding flavours, so little time and belly-space. I immediately dismissed the more “typical” ice creams, like rum-raisin, chocolate mint, pistachio and strawberry cheesecake. I hesitated when I hit mandarin, blueberry (the swirls of bright purple and white had an almost irresistible pull) and cappuccino, but it was the green tea ice cream that got me. I’ve sampled a few green tea ice creams in my time, and this has to be my favourite. Usually, this flavour tends to go one of two ways: extremely bland, or extremely perfumed. This one was neither. It starts subtly, sits sweet on your tongue, and goes down with that distinguishable light and fragrant green tea taste.

Then, it was time to be adventurous, so I decided to have my first taste of tofu ice cream. There’s only a few flavours available in the tofu line, including cherry, mocha and chocolate fudge. I opted for the maple-nut. This had to be one of the strangest foods I have tried, and I’ve eaten my fair share of oddities. It was very apparent there was no dairy in it, but I couldn't quite tell if it was the taste or the texture. It had a smooth, consistent and almost gummy. It reminded me of the skin that sits on puddings or in thawed and refrozen ice cream. Not bad, but I’m still not quite sure if I enjoyed it. Perhaps cherry would have been a better option, as the sweet sweet maple was a bit overbearing for the texture.
20070828_patio6.jpgFinally, I had to try the addiction of many, chocolate. The choice was between 6x chocolate, chocolate-orange and chocolate-raspberry. Raspberry won out, and it was a fine winner indeed. The chocolate was dark and sweet, with chocolate scrapings scattered throughout the ice cream. It could have used a few more raspberry swirls in it, as chocolate was clearly the predominant flavour.
20070828_patio4.jpgWith no room for any of the sorbets Le Patio offers, I’ll have to go back for a sorbet-sampling. First on that list will be the litchee, guava-grapefruit and passionfruit. Why does summer have to end so soon?
