Super Noodles at Restaurant Uyghur

Restaurant Uyghur has a review from the Mirror posted on its door which describes its food as a combination of Chinese, Turkish and Indian cuisine. I couldn’t read a description like that and pass the place by. My curiosity paid off in spades, because the restaurant served me some of the tastiest noodles I’ve ever had.

Walking into Restaurant Uyghur was a rather dramatic experience. Due to a combination of hunger and sleepiness, I don’t remember many details about the décor apart from a television in the corner playing what I assume was an Uyghur music video. But I distinctly remember noticing that the restaurant had a rather tremendous amount of space and almost no people. The sparsely populated dining room could be explained by the earliness of the hour (it was the late afternoon when I arrived). Still, I got the sense that the waiter was a little lonely; especially when he refilled my water glass three times in the span of five minutes even though I’d drank no more than a milliliter of water. I hoped for his sake that the place got busier in the evening.

The restaurant’s menu seemed to consist of a few kinds of pastries filled with chopped lamb or beef, some different types of kebabs, some vegetable dishes, and several variations on noodles with chopped lamb or beef on top. I asked the waiter to recommend something for me, which he seemed somewhat reluctant to do (“I love everything!”). Eventually, I settled on the second noodle/meat dish on the menu (which had chopped lamb on noodles), an eggplant dish, and some bread.

My food arrived promptly, steaming and smelling great. And the noodles were spectacular. The menu had stated that they were handmade and fresh, but their tender, chewy texture and irregular shape made it obvious that they hadn’t been cranked out of a machine. The meat sauce had a mild flavor, and did little more than add fat to compliment the texture of the noodles. That was all it had to do. The eggplant dish was cooked down and mixed with a highly spiced sauce. Eventually, I dumped it over the noodles, which seemed to soak up every flavor they touched.

The least interesting item that I ordered was the bread, which was (inexplicably) not fresh. It had some seeds and seasoning sprinkled on top, which probably would have added a lot of flavor if it had come straight from the oven. Sadly, it arrived at my table at room temperature and stiff.

At first glance, Restaurant Uyghur doesn’t look much different from any of the big Chinese restaurants in Chinatown. But the noodles speak for themselves. I would never let a few slices of dry bread stand between me and a bowl of those handmade noodles.
