20071019_angela2.jpgSometimes, the “$0.99” pizza slice just isn’t enough. Every once and a while, I am not satisfied with this Montreal culinary claim-to-fame and I want some pizza with a little more substance and taste. The pizza at Angela’s has, for the past few times, stepped up to the challenge and made me love and appreciate pizza just a little bit more.

Voted one of the best pizzas in the city, Angela’s offers up a pie that is a vast improvement over some of the other winners. These pizzas are not the mass-produced pies dripping with grease and spray-on butter, nor are they the lukewarm, cardboard pies found on too many street corners. Nope, these pizzas are the real deal: thick with mozzarella cheese, a traditional tomato sauce laden with spices and a perfect crust that rarely finds its equal.

20071019_angela1.jpgThere are lots of choices to be made when picking your pizza. Fortunately, they have a deal where you can buy four pizzas for the price of three (any size), so you can have some variety, not to mention pizza for breakfast for the next week. My favourite is the vegetarian, a pie packed with veggie goodness: artichoke hearts, asparagus, mushrooms, green peppers and green olives. The colour ends up being a bit monotonous, but the taste definitely does not. The asparagus and olives play the starring role, and every bite includes some of these ingredients. The artichoke hearts are used a bit more sparingly, but that’s okay; they add a nice, bright touch every now and then. This is the most heavily-topped option I've had, and the most enjoyable.
20071019_angela3.jpgOn the other end of the spectrum is the Greek Special: the menu makes it sound very nice, topped with feta, kalamata olives, onions and tomatoes, and in theory, this should make one fantastic pie. Unfortunately though, the just a few crumbles of feta and six kalamata olives do not constitute a Greek pizza. A bit more cheese, olives and tomatoes would have made this oniony pizza far more enjoyable.

The Angela Special is far different. Loaded with pepperoni and bacon, this is one salty, meaty, heavy pie. Like any all-dressed pizza, the usuals are there as well: green peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. Nothing fancy, nothing novel, just a richly topped pizza oozing cheese. The crust is not too thick or overly doughy, but substantial enough to hold up the layer of toppings. The sauce is actually minimal, and on all the pizzas, is an accent to the pizza rather than being a main ingredient.

Other pizzas are also available, like the smoked meat, Mexican or Italian. If pizza doesn’t grab you, then Angela offers you subs or pasta, or a wide variety of poutine, including a feta version or one with fried mushrooms. Open late (6am!) and with a delivery service that extends to the Plateau, Angela is one of the better pizza options out there.

For those of us sho live in the west end of downtown (like me for 15 years) we cannot walk by Angela's at 4 in the AM without thinking about going in. It's like it beckons us. It's heaven and nirvana all in one.

The Angela Special is the world's perfect pizza (aasuming you like meat). I want one NOW!!

After reading this review, I made a mental note to try this place next time I would be in Montreal, wich happened to be a few days ago.

Verdict: Great service but nothing memorable about the pizza, I tried the Angela's special, and while there was plenty of cheese and toppings it was a little overcooked for my taste; the bacon strips and and the crust were to hard for my liking.

Not bad overall, just ok, I might return to try a sub or some pasta instead next time I am in town.
