Baked in Montreal - Calories!

Posted by Emily / November 21, 2007

It all started a few weeks ago when a friend and I were sharing an enormous piece of chocolate cake at Calories. I asked what other cakes she’d tried at the bakery, and she shrugged and said “All the desserts are good here.”

To me, that sounded like a challenge. I wondered, are all the desserts good at Calories? There was only one way to know for sure. I would have to try as many of them as possible.

I treated it just like any other science experiment: the cakes were the variable, while my insatiable sweet tooth remained constant. By the end of my data collection, I’d sampled more cakes and pies than any normal human should, and I'd come up with some conclusive results.

First off, Calories offers several varieties of chocolate cake, and they are all spectacular. At least one version of a humongous chocolate cake with layers of ganache and dense icing appears in the display case every day. Some might complain that the cakes are too rich. But I say if you want to eat something light, have an apple. That way, there will be more chocolate cake for the rest of us.

The Reese’s Pieces cake was a bit disappointing, but my scientific objectivity may have been compromised by the fact that I’ve recently fallen out of love with Reese’s Pieces (peanut butter M&M’s are far superior). The cake was much too sweet and was crying out for more peanut butter.

The fruit tart was much more my style. Glistening gelatin-coated fruit sat atop creamy custard and a perfect pie crust. The tart had just the right proportions: lots of fruit and lots of custard.

Another fine dessert on the lighter side of the spectrum (lighter than say, a stick of butter coated in chocolate) was the key lime pie. The sweetness and tartness of the filling was balanced out by unsweetened whipped cream on top and a graham cracker crust. I seriously considered asking for seconds.

I saw the raspberry cheesecake in the display window on several of my visits to the bakery, but I hesitated to try it until my last visit. You see, I’m a cheesecake purist. I believe in a cheesecake that is almost impossibly dense, not too cream-cheesy, with a hint of sourness. It’s out there, somewhere in this city. And after I tried Calories’ cheesecake, I knew I’d have to keep looking. It was very good, with a pretty swirl of raspberry syrup on top, but it didn’t compare to the exemplar in my mind.

Okay, so I didn’t actually try all the desserts at Calories. Not yet anyway. But I’ve tried enough of them to reach one conclusion: not all the desserts are earthshakingly delicious, but they’re all somewhere on the deliciousness spectrum. I’ve never left a plate at Calories with anything on it besides a fork.

I’m considering it my duty to carry on with my little experiment, just to make sure there aren’t any duds on Calories’ menu. I may have gained a few pounds, but hey, it’s all in the name of science.

Is that a kind of Calories cake or do you mean the kind from the supermarket? Either way, I haven't tried it. Why? Is it worth getting?
