Big Breakfasts @ La Petite Marche

Posted by Kim / December 12, 2007

20071212_petite5.jpgIt’s hard to do breakfast wrong. After that eight-hour fast (at least – gimme ten!), any food is so tasty that I’m afraid it might sometimes cloud my judgment. Such is not the case with La Petite Marche, which I had my first breakfast experience with just a few days ago. It’s pretty much a given that I will be returning.

The first thing that charmed me about the place was its size. If I showed up at any other breakfast place at 11:30am on a Saturday morning, I would have been standing in a long and chilly line. Not at La Petite Marche though – with three big dining rooms, this place can hold a lot of people. It’s bustling and busy, but it still has a cozy feel, perfect for breakfast.

To match the big restaurant are big breakfasts! Every breakfast comes side dishes of mushrooms sautéed in wine, tomatoes, potatoes, bacon, ham and sausage, baguette, fruit, and coffee and orange juice. No, I did not make a typo – there is no having to choose between any of these side dishes; they ALL come with your meal. I don’t consider it gluttony, as all of the portions are on the smaller side and with that much food, that’s just fine with me.

20071212_petite3.jpgThe first thing on the table is the coffee and juice. I really enjoyed the coffee; it was dark and nutty and wasn’t at all like the watered-down coffee I often get at other breakfast places. Our table ordered a variety of breakfasts, including the Crepes Portefeuille, which had two crepes stuffed with spinach that had been sautéed in wine, and cheddar cheese, served with maple syrup and field berry coulis, along with two eggs. The crepes were nicely done, perfectly thin and a bit crispy. The spinach/cheese combo was great, especially when smothered under the sweet and tart coulis (which seemed more like a very thick yogurt-based smoothie - creamy, sweet and utterly fantastic). The scrambled eggs were well done, light and fluffy.
20071212_petite4.jpgAlso on the table were the Crepes des Bédouins, crepes filled with a sweet mixture of nuts, dates and figs that had been flambéed in cognac. These also came with two eggs, and they do their sunny side up eggs as well as they do their scrambled. Finally, we had the Petit Dejeuner al Salmon, which included two eggs and smoked salmon rolled with goat and Swiss cheese, with a sprinkling of lemon zest. Absolutely heavenly.

The side dishes were all very good – bacon that was crispy but not burnt, thin strips of salty ham, a sausage that made me reconsider my dislike for sausages, and two fat potato slices covered with herbs. My favourite were the mushrooms – not sliced mushrooms, but whole button ones, full of juice and flavour.
20071212_petite1.jpgOther plates available for the $11.95 price tag are the feta and shallot omelet, omelet al andalouse (veggies sautéed in wine, shallots and sauce napolitaine), or the poached eggs with spinach, ham and Swiss and cheddar cheese and hollandaise sauce. Needless to say, I’ll be back. Again and again and again.

Kim,

I have been to this nice breakfast place as well and I have to agree with you on everything; it is indeed a very large place but cozy anyway. The service was extremely friendly and efficient and the food was great. I too will return and who knows - maybe I will bump into you some day.
