Sushi Take-Out @ Tataki

Posted by Kim / January 18, 2008

20080118_tataki4.jpgI love a fine, high-end sushi meal. Unfortunately, my bank account doesn’t, so those meals are not as frequent as I would like. I firmly believe, however, that I should not have to go without a good sushi-fix on a regular basis, so what’s one to do? Tataki, I recently discovered. Tataki. Very affordable, your choices prepared on the spot, and fresh-tasting fish make this place my new sushi spot.

A small resto with perhaps four tables inside, Tataki is mostly take-out, which is just fine with me (and actually, preferred). It’s clean and well-lit, with gorgeous sushi photos and posters on the walls, a little grocery section with noodles and Japanese mayo and a husband-and-wife team behind the counter. My first time there, I wanted to play it safe – while they have more interesting items on their rather extensive menu, I tried out the chef’s 20-piece assortment tray. If a sushi place can’t even get the basic sushi out, well, then there’s a problem. They had quite a few springroll options, so I gave the red tuna one a try too.

20080118_tataki3.jpgFor $18.95, I am treated to twenty pieces of fresh sushi, each piece prepared on the spot. It’s a little bit of a wait, but having something that hasn’t been sitting in tray in a fridge for who knows how long makes it entirely worth it. My assortment includes a ten pieces from a large roll, six pieces from small cucumber and avocado rolls, and four nigiris, each one of those different. The cucumber and avocado rolls were fine – perfectly ripened avocado, which is something that not all sushi joint always manage to do.
20080118_tataki6.jpgBut on to the fish! My large rolls include the fantastic tataki roll, with fried shrimps, green onion, asparagus, wasabi, cucumber and mayonnaise. The shrimp are fried well, not greasy, but crunchy and fresh-tasting. The wasabi is just a subtle heat, and not overpowering in the least.
Also in my tray is a dynamite roll, tasting just how a dynamite roll should taste. Tataki isn’t cheap with their fillings either; each roll was nicely packed with fish. The rice in the rolls is also very well-prepared, tender and lightly flavoured.

The nigiri is what really brought it home though. The salmon was buttery, smooth, and fresh, absolutely delightful. The shrimp was plump and juicy, and the tuna tasted as fresh as all the other fish there. Next time, I’ll be making a more customized order, and the nigiri will be ordered in abundance!

The springroll? This was no skinny, barely stuffed roll; this was like an entire meal in itself! Stuffed to excess with rice, cucumber, lettuce, avocado and mint, the red tuna got a bit lost, but was a nice surprise every time I found a piece.
20080118_tataki7.jpgThey offer rolls with tempura shrimp (or non-tempura, too), and I think that might be a better bet. They come with a delicious tangy, salty, lemongrassy sauce.

I will be returning to Tataki. Next time, I’ll go for some different choices, as I really want to explore their menu more thoroughly. Some quail egg and mackerel nigiri, the spicy salmon roll with dill and lemon, and the wakame roll, with grilled salmon, wakame, mandarin and mint. Tataki also offers deep-fried rolls, miso soup and wasabi ice cream, all of which are on my list.
