Main Madness! August 21st - 24th: The Food Edition
Main Madness, aka Frénésie de la "Main", falls upon St-Laurent again this weekend. It does sadden me; this second street sale tradition beckons the return of autumn. But then I think about the great food and somewhat great bargains I will be enjoying all weekend, and I start to love it a little more.
There is a plethora of chow mein dealers out and about, ranging from $2.00 - $3.00. Beware though, not all chow mein is created equal! Ignore th sellers who don't consider it worth their while to throw in at least a handful of bean sprouts...as good as chow mein is, it can not exist on noodles alone.
Also take a look at serving sizes; some places heap the noodles on, and some barely fill the styrofoam container. My preferred chow mein dealer, judging from earlier this summer, is the place right below Just Noodles - filled to the top, and bursting with bean sprouts and perhaps just a little less MSG.
Another great food item to check out are the meat sandwiches; choose between chicken (just so-so) an dmore interesting beef kabobs or lamb. Be sure if you are going out to a club that night that you do not eat one of these sandwiches. The amount of garlic is incredible.
I'll be checking out more food stalls this weekend, and bringing you my favs and not-so favs. As always, I'm open to suggestions, so if you have some Main Madness food to recommend to me, please do!

Hey. I have a bbq corn stand situated right next to the Just Noodles booth. Come check us out for some corn on the grill or some cotton candy if your in the mood. We got beats playing all day and night so corn hut is definetly the place to be!

Montreal why do you have to be so far away from me :(:(:(
After the binge fest at the Fringe Fest(!) a couple of months ago, I definitely need to show up for the last street sale of the year!
A couple of highlights other than the noodles Kim had mentioned include Portuguese egg tarts, Indian food outside of Scratch Kitchen, and arguably the best, a $5-plate of grilled sardines and salad purchased at a French charcuterie just above Marie-Anne (beside Samos bakery). Stay away from the lemongrass chicken skewers at Thai cuisine; they suffered from spoilage.
Thanks for the warning, kitty, and thanks for the suggestion - sounds delicious, and I'll check it out!
