Casserole Sandwiches in Westmount

Posted by Amie / May 12, 2010

CasseroleWhat would happen if you took a chicken casserole and turned it into a sandwich? At Casserole, a new cafe on Sherbrooke West, it fortunately has nothing to do with canned cream of mushroom soup. A great patio, a friendly owner, and fresh sandwiches has made Casserole the best new lunch spot in Westmount.

Casserole's SaladsThe menu's small, but that means everything's fresh and less food is wasted. The tomatoes in the tomato cucumber salad are bright red, and the yellow and red peppers brighten up another option of mixed greens.
Casserole3You should really try the sandwiches, says the owner, Alessandra. Everything but the bread is prepared in-house, and all the ingredients, even the bread, are carefully sourced to make sure they're of the best quality. Your options? Chicken with mayo, Greek chicken, chicken casserole, vegetarian casserole and steak and mushrooms. Even if I hated casserole I'd want to buy a sandwich to sit on the patio on a sunny day. They also do brunch on Saturdays. Prime people-watching.

Hours: 8am-8pm daily, 10am-5pm Saturday
Expect to Pay: $7 for a casserole sandwich, $11 with a salad and a coffee, tax included

I don't like to review the food of a restaurant when it's so new. 3 weeks isn't a lot of time to get into the swing of things. A lot of things can change in a menu, and I wouldn't want to write up something and then find out it's inaccurate a few weeks later. I'm definitely excited to get back there, though, and give an update in a month or so.

Still, I like to announce a restaurant opening as soon as possible, to spread the word.

Love this blog and the food!
Im heading off to study at montreal soon but im quite unfamiliar with the system of tipping.

Do all the prices on your website include tips? And do you need to pay tip for foodcourt or take away food eg. cuisine bangkok that you wrote about?

Hey A,

Thanks for the love! The prices I give in the EXPECT TO PAY section at the bottom will include tax and tip, but when I give prices in the body of the post it's usually the price before tax and tip. Sometimes, though it's rare, a restaurant will list the prices on their menu including tax, but tip isn't mandatory so they wouldn't include that. You'd pay extra.

If you're at a cafeteria style place it's up to you whether to tip, but it's not expected in the same way it would be at a restaurant with full table service. Here's more info since it's a sticky subject: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g153339-s606/Canada:Tipping.And.Etiquette.html

Personally I generally tip on coffee but not take-out. I'd probably give some change to a tip jar even in a cafeteria-style place, but if I didn't have any change on me I wouldn't feel awful. Definitely I would tip on delivery. If you feel like you got some form of good service, then it's good to tip, but don't let tourist places, or anywhere for that matter, take advantage of you not knowing the etiquette.

Hope you love this city!

Casserole Verdict: I went back here a good month and a bit after writing the initial post to try the casserole sandwich concept. I can see where the restaurant is coming from with using cream cheese in the chicken sandwich and creamy homemade mayonnaise, but I think the name is more cute than appropriate. Still, the bread is absolutely delicious - so chewy and fresh, and nicely warmed on the grill - and the mayo is a textbook rendition of what it should be. That's a good thing. I liked the little bit of lemon in it for flavour. Often mayo is just flavourless, or over-sweetened, texture, so I find it a big waste, but not here. The side salad was even nice because of the simple homemade Asian dressing. It was basically sesame oil, honey, a little garlic, and a little bit of vinegar, probably rice vinegar. The honey stood out, so if you don't like sweet, you might not be blown away, but I liked it, especially when eaten with the nicely savoury sandwich.

So the food is simple and good. It's fairly healthy (the chicken is so tender from being marinated in a fair bit of oil, but it's probably a better oil for you than fast food...and there are no preservatives), and the grilled vegetables are very fresh. Even the vegetarian casserole sandwich doesn't feel like deprivation.

There was no one else in the place on a sunny Saturday afternoon, which is not a good sign, but hopefully they'd be packed for lunch earlier. A guy who lived in the neighbourhood wandered in just to check it out, so as long as people keep being curious about the place, they could do well. There's even a big screen TV with a laptop hooked up to watch the world cup, which is what I did with the guy working the cash, since no else required his cashiering skills at the time.
