Nuit Blanche Food: Mulled Wine, Hot Chocolate, BBQ, Tapas, and Baked Goods

Posted by Amie / February 26, 2011

Nuit Blanche Montreal - food and hot chocolateFood is art, right? Okay, maybe not the sausages being sold at the Quartier des Spectacles SAQ bistro or Le Cabaret du Roy, but just as Luc has his priorities Nuit Blanche-wise, so do I. And that definitely includes hot chocolate, mulled wine, tapas, and baked goods...

This night is generally not about food, but just as I recommended energy bars for POP Montreal, you're going to need some fuel to get you through the Nuit Blanche all-nighter.

Top Picks in Order of Deliciousness

1. Hot Chocolate Ice Bar at the CCA
I'm thinking the bar is made of ice and the chocolate is served hot, but wouldn't it be great if the bar was hot and the chocolate was ice? Or the bar was made of chocolate and everyone had to gnaw on it? Now that's performance art. Or maybe the chocolate could be spiked with chili peppers ("hot") and you take a cup of shaved ice and a few pieces of rich, dark chili-chocolate and you combine them in your mouth in one art explosion!

You're probably just supposed to take your styrofoam cup of powdered cocoa and sugar and enjoy a free performance by Grimes...That's probably the next best thing art-wise. Probably.

2. Mulled Wine at Gallimard Bookstore - 3700 St-Laurent
You need to sign up to get into this event, much like you need an appointment for a free haircut at Coupe Bizarre, but mulled wine on a cold night is a satisfying thing. If you're not into cloves, cinnamon, orange, and ginger, still go to listen to the (non-bedtime) stories "from wintry countries."

1. La Elastica - 4602 St-Laurent
Grab some Spanish tapas (probably not free) and sit down to enjoy the 18th Festival of Independent cinema from Barcelona being presented at the gallery. Popcorn's got nothing on grilled calamari.

2. Sweet Lee's Bakery - 956 rue Ottawa
While Sweet Lee's usual selection of cheesecakes, squares, and other baked goods will be sold in the Griffintown Cultural Corridor they'll also be offering soups, sandwiches, and hot beverages for your more substantial belly-filling requirements. The plan is to use BBQs and firepits to heat and toast their items, so bring a bag of marshmallows and if you ask real nice, maybe you can melt it and stick it between two of Sweet Lee's chocolate cookies. If you want to hear more about Sweet Lee's, check out the past Midnight Poutine Podcast where I nearly get kicked off for comparing cheesecake and cookies to various songs. Thanks, Alain, for your support. Jeremy may not think you're a real person, but I believe in you.

A portion of the profits from Sweet Lee's is going to be donated to the Verdun charity PetitsPawz, which provides refuge to mistreated and un-cared for cats.

Sweet Lee's will also be at Puces POP next Saturday, the DIY-type flea market/craft fair at the St-Enfant de Jesus Church at St-Dominique and St-Joseph.

Besides these options, lots of galleries sell beer and wine to make a little extra money. And just like at POP Montreal, Grumman '78 will be selling tacos all night, this time out of their usual haunt: the Nouveau Palais in Mile End.

And this is probably what you're going to want the morning (or afternoon) after:
Montreal Nuit Blanche - St-Viateur Bagel from Bagel Etc.Le St-Viateur @ Bagel etc.

Happy wandering!

Awesome set of Social Icons, both v1 & v2. Question I have is, would it be possible to get an image of a shopping cart or maybe even the template so I could insert an image of a shopping cart? It’s the only image missing that I need for my site to go with the rest of the Social Icons.
