Poutine Week in Review: Patati Patata

Posted by Christine / February 7, 2013

IMG_0184.JPG Many of us are familiar with Patati Patata's jauntily-painted exterior. It's a riot of color sitting on the bustling corner of Rachel and St. Laurent, drawing in hungry patrons like bees to a flower. I found myself buzzing along on a Wednesday afternoon with a mind to try their version of a dish most beloved amongst our staff: poutine.

Inside, the walls are painted a dandelion yellow. If it's bright outside, the sunlight will stream in generously from the large surrounding windows. It might feel to you like being inside the sun, a most curious and wonderful sensation to experience, especially in the heart of a Canadian winter.

The interior is quite modest in size. It has a long bar that wraps around the cooking area, as well as a few couple-sized side tables. This diner-style resto can seat about 15 people in all. With that said, it fills up quickly, particularly during peak hours. Expect a nice timely-served meal free of dilly-dallying. One may also take their food to go.

For less than $5 you can try Patati Patata's classic poutine. Classic indeed, but with a few pleasant surprises. Garnished with a single olive, this dish also boasts the inclusion of red wine to its gravy. This is done skillfully as the sauce is not thinned out by the red wine; it maintains the thick consistency one would desire from gravy. The red wine note is subtle, yet significant to the dish.

The fries are thin, salty and crisp, Patati Patata's signature ingredient. The cheese curds are firm and chewy because they are not overly-doused in gravy. In my opinion, this reveals artful restraint and a confidence in the quality of the ingredients being used.

Served warm amongst warm surroundings of friendly staff, stained glass lamps, plants, French pop music and earnest local musicians posting their show dates along the walls, Patati Patata's poutine is an essential Montreal experience.
