Poutine Week Poutines on at Maamm Bolduc

maam-bolduc-06-02-2013.jpgAs this week in poutine has brought out many outrageous, albeit delicious, poutine concoctions, I wanted to remind readers of our old-timey favourites. While foie gras, lobster and filet mignon on poutine might be some of the smartest decisions of the 21st century, my eternal love for poutine is built on a solid (and god do I mean that literally) foundation of fries, cheese curds and gravy.

At Maamm Bolduc, the dish is served up unpretentiously in a setting as cozy as grandma's house and how your bed will feel after eating a whole one of these. It makes the most sense to me to walk a half hour through -15 degree weather to feel like I've really earned my heaping pile of meaty and saucy goodness in a brightly coloured, eclectically decorated neighbourhood joint. I might be starting to understand the strategic timing of Poutine Week...

When I go to Maamm Bolduc, sitting down at the wooden table and chairs, it's hard for me to order anything but the Bourguignonne: fries topped with classic curds, onions, mushrooms, more ground beef than is most certainly recommended by Health Canada's Food Guide and red wine gravy. A classic in its own right.

bourguignonne-06-02-2013.jpgNow I might be contradicting my seemingly purist poutine lover opening, but this is what poutine wanted to be the very first time it was made, this is a meal for a genuine starving lumberjack in the middle of the winter. A mere $8.99 gets you a regular sized order. Now remember that in the world of poutine, "regular" should probably be interpreted as a dare. A large would definitely be biting off more than I can chew.

If I had to criticize one thing about this place, I'd say that I prefer my fries on the crispier side, but everything else makes up for that in my in my opinion.

peppers-06-02-2013.jpgSome of my friends chose to dress up their bacon and vegetarian poutines with hot peppers. This choice always creeps me out a bit a first and is not something I would think of ordering, but I always end up being glad it's at the table. Another friend ordered the hotdog poutine and almost finished it. It must be said that she is 5 foot 2 and tiny. So, hats off to her.

Another way Maamm Bolduc proves that it knows how to do things right is by serving reasonably priced pitchers of beer, which is pretty much the only beverage that should be forever joined in holy matrimony with this salt-and-fat-festival of a dish. Maybe except for spruce beer.

beer-06-02-2013.jpgAlthough Poutine Week will soon come to an end, there is still a chunk of winter yet; there is poutine to be had! This place will warm your hearts and stomachs with its friendly service, adorable atmosphere and authentic good stuff.

Then, when the warm weather roles around, you can go and enjoy a pitcher and whatever you want to eat on Maamm Bolduc's patio. On that warm thought: Merry Poutine Week to all and to all a good night!
