News bites: January 8, 2007

Cesar banana.jpgMontreal artist Cesar Saez plans to float a huge banana over San Antonio to "bring some humor to the Texas sky." A spokesperson for the US Federal Aviation Administration office had this to say: "You can't just put an object over the United States without checking with agencies and organizations."

The Montreal housing market is inflated all across the island, except underground. Competition among cemeteries is keeping plot prices down. Increases are well below inflation and the city's oldest and largest cemetery, Notre Dame des Neiges, has announced a price freeze.

In Season four of the Sopranos, Tony buys up a trio of crack houses in a real estate scam. His crew strips the copper piping and sells it for a neat $7,000 to the scrap metal market. In Montreal yesterday, a man was electrocuted and burned beyond recognition while trying to steal copper wire from an electrical tower.

Men's naked yoga classes take off in Montreal. Women still waiting for theirs.

Opponents to the Park Avenue name change haven't given up yet.

I'm not sure about his choice of fruit. The Houston Chronicle offers a bit more information about the project. Saez, it seems, likes to blur the line between truth and hoax. Apparently he's already collaborating with an international team of scientists to sort out the materials and gyroscopes that will keep it afloat, and a Argentinian newspaper says he did a test flight in Cuba. Does anyone have a confirmation on that?
