The Procrastination of Crowds

Posted by Jer / February 7, 2007

Wiki.png We are we. We are web 2.0. We are wiki.

Long before Time magazine anointed you, us, WE, as people of the year, web proponents have been pushing the potential power of collaborative networks: groups of people working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. These wired webizens have created countless new sources of news, entertainment, and knowledge. Wikis are the new black.

Whether you believe in the wisdom of crowds or fear the dumbness of them, there's no denying that what collaborative networks really show is just how much time people have on their hands. I could refer you to YouTube, MySpace or even Midnight Poutine, but instead allow me to share the Uncyclopedia.

As a parody of Wikipedia, it's like the Onion on steroids. Unfortunately, the site is so much of a parody that I can't figure out how many people actually contribute articles to it. But surely innumerable hours were spent in its production and maintenance. Uncyclopedia is a project of pure love and dedication and will likely never receive the glory of its more knowledgeable nemesis. Still, I encourage you to explore the site. Waste some time. Run a search for Asplode or Wikipedia and waste some more time. The entry for poutine is particularly enjoyable.

Feel free to add any other funny searches in the comments section. I've only spent an hour on the site and another hour writing this post and there's still at least 10 hours left of today.

If this is what Web 2.0 is all about, I can't wait to see Web. 3.0.

Thanks for sharing this John! I had no idea about this iinitative until now, despite being an electronic music fan. I love finding new music through blogs I learn about via Hype Machine, maybe there is a way to borrow some best practices from this model over time. Please continue to share the story of this evolving project. I hope you do get some web space though on the Radio 3 site. By the way, I loved the magazine format; it was so beautiful.
