This Week in Blogs for Feb 22

Posted by Scott / February 22, 2007

door-250.jpgThis week in local blogs – sketchy real estate in our second-class city!

While doing the weekly roundup and listening to Julien Smith’s In Over Your Head podcast, I came across a lot of posts about landlords, tenants and crime in Montreal.

Of note, Zeke’s Gallery posted about the break-in and robbery of Gallerie Articule and linked out to more information from Hour’s website. For anyone who has visited Gallerie Articule in their former location on Berri or in its current location at 262 Fairmount West, I urge you to visit again this weekend and show your support. Articule expects to have its exhibit of Katja Host’s work up again by then, and I’m sure they would appreciate some voices of encouragement from Montreal’s artistic community (that means you, dude).

Also in local blogs, Montreal City Weblog collects info on “bad tenants, murderous tenants, pathologically filthy tenants” and much more. Coupled with Coolopolis’ usual posts about unique Montreal architecture it makes for some interesting reading and strange counterpoint to each other.

But perhaps the specific mix of big city problems and cool cache can be found on Metroblogging Montreal’s post about our fair city being best served as a second-class city. While we may not all agree on the title, and are perhaps frustrated by some of the problems we face here, I think there’s substance in the premise that Montreal thrives because it is more Austin than Houston, more Charlotte than Chicago, or, um, more Montreal than Toronto.

However, I guess it’s up for debate. What do YOU think?

Perhaps your responses could fuel Next Week in Blogs!

The places that are cool these days are teh 'second-class' cities. Be it Montreal, or the city I live by, Philadelphia, or Portland, Oregon. There's nothing wrong with it at all. When I go to New York, it's fun enough, but it just doesn't have the edgier feel of Philly. Everything up there is getting so banal. I haven't been to Montreal yet (going in two weeks actually), but I'm sure I'll love it because it seems like a cool alternative type place.

If second class means we don't have all the money companies - banks, brokers, etc. Then I'm all for it. It makes things fun AND afordable.

i wonder if there's a connexion between a city being edgy and having lots of crime, or being banal and having less. i mean, i'm not saying that a city like NY is free of crime...more that there seems to be more crime in MTL than you'd expect for a "b-list" city. in general, i fink its connected to wealth, or a lack thereof. you know?
but certainly, i connect more w/ MTL and its decidedly artistic vibe.

Great tip on the IOYH podcast. I stumbled across it a few weeks ago and it has some great tracks on it.

Is montreal more snapple than pepsi? more mac than pc? or more participation award than gold medal?

comfort class is what via calls it. the first class people get to board the train first and sit in a fancy waiting area. when they walk out everyone looks at them and i'm sure some are thinking 'they all think i'm rich', sure some might. i just think that you paid way too much for a train ticket.

does MTL have a lot of crime? i always got the feeling that canadian cities were pretty safe, at least by north american standards.

regarding the crime - i'm thinking more colloquially than statistically (tho stats could back it up). pretty much everyone in mtl has experienced break-ins, bike theft, muggings, etc., or are good friends w/ someone who has. the break in at articule's a good example. prominent street, art gallery, completely cleaned out.
