Don't drink the water. A common advisory to heed whilst travelling to certain Central American countries, flood zones, or my apartment. Many Montrealers (mid-pouts writers & readers included) have received notices from the City of Montreal that pregnant woman and children under six should not drink the tap water in residential buildings (with eight units or less) contructed prior to 1970 due to higher than normal levels of lead. That's a very significant chunk of the City's housing. The City says the risk of lead contamination is low, and the notice trys to reassure people by pointing out that no one has ever died in Montreal of lead poisoning from tap water. Yet. The City is planning to replace all lead piping leading from principle water mains into residential buildings by 2026.

DDO resident Gemma Raeburn has finally won her case against three Montreal police officers whom she accused of uttering racist comments. In 2004, Ms. Raeburn was cleaning out her garage with the help of two elderly, male friends, when police entered the garage, drew their guns, and accused the men of being bandits. The police said they were acting on a tip that two men wearing "black masks" were moving items out of a garage. Good lord, is it not reasonable to accomodate black people who would like to clean out their garage?

More from the "Can't We All Just Get Along?" Department: Quebec's Human Rights Commission finds that homophobia is still rampant in the province and recommends new guidlelines and more anti-homophobia training for public-sector employees. And Alex Kovalev stresses he didn't say those things he said. Coach Carbonneau states he believes his star forward. Why didn't they just trade his expensive ass? One thing that, sadly, isn't a misquote: 10th in the standings. Oof.

Finally, the City is going to pump $55 million into the area around Place des Arts, known as the Quartier des spectacles. Mayor Tremblay is hoping that private investors and developers will foot a hefty portion of the bill. Final blueprints for the plan will be revealed in the fall of this year.

And in Today's Food Section: Carnivores mourn loss of landmark butcher shop to fire, make the best of the barbecue; St. Hubert wants to put their "dirty bird" in airports throughout Quebec and Canada; local chefs left with lots to chew on post High Lights Festival gastronomic blitz; and March means it's maple sugar time in Quebec!

I'm curious: Who got a notice from the city regarding the water?

I received a notice, and anyone living around the Mile End area likely did. The reports on CBC radio this morning said certain residents of the Plateau, NDG, and Villeray got notices. My water is, admittedly, a little sketchy, but seeing as I'm not under six or pregnant, I'm not worth saving.

But chrissakes, if they have to dig up Bernard one more time...

I got one too... Plateau. Didn't really scare me at all... I'm not pregnant or under 6. I'm drinking a glass of water straight from the tap as I type this. But then, I don't wash fruit before eating it either... I'm lazy and stupid that way.

I live right on Park Avenue and I didn't get a notice. This makes me nervous. Are the pipes in my part of Mile End somehow less old and grotty than the ones a block away?
