Thursday's News Now - Mar. 8, 2007

Posted by Jer / March 8, 2007

Thinking of escaping to Cuba to avoid the last few days of winter? Well, there's trouble in travel paradise. Go Travel Direct has launched an anti-competition lawsuit against larger Tour/Vacation agencies (among them, Montreal's Tours Mont-Royal and the Association des Tours Operateurs du Quebec). Go Travel's business model includes cutting out the middle man in vacation planning. Unsurprisingly, the middle men were not pleased and colluded (so says the plaintiff) to corner Go Travel out of the market.

In other leisure news, Jean Charest goes skiing but can't escape talking about his slip up on the "partition" issue. Meanwhile, the PQ is dealing with a slip of its own, as La Presse reports that a party candidate denies the Rwandan genocide.

In addition to yesterday's water worries, Montrealers can also worry about irregularities in their taxes. The CRA is in the midst of trying to fix a major computer shutdown that put a halt to online tax filings over the last week. All the more reason to do your taxes by hand...assuming you can still write and add without the help of a computer, which I can't.

Finally, in music news, 1970s and 80s superband Genesis have decided that The Police are getting too much attention with their reunion tour. Phil Collins and co. have just announced dates for their North American Tour. There is no word as to whether or when the two bands will meet in a steel cage match showdown. Go relive your awkward years as Genesis hits Montreal in Sept. (tickets go on sale this weekend).
