Sheesh, either local news of a well-rounded quality is few and far between these days, or crime in the city is on the rise. Headlines are straight outta a downtown precinct: a nine-year child was doused with gasoline, a young Dorval woman was killed while trying to intervene in a fight, prostitute Nancy Dube recounts her attempts to cover up a murder, and an accused cop killer says he's sorry.

More news from the "That's no excuse" Department: The continuing inquiry into the Laval overpass collapse reveals serious confusion over who was supervising the construction of the overpass, if indeed anyone was.

Excuses have run out for Andre Boisclair, who is facing a serious split with his party, while over at another party, Justin Trudeau is facing two rivals in his campaign to win the Liberal nomination in the Montreal riding of Papineau.

But the ultimate party took place in 1967! The summer of love and Expo celebrates 40 years since the world arrived on Montreal's doorstep. The Gazette is running a special series of articles and reader's reflections.

Speaking of readers, the 9th Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival kicks off today. Participants include Heather O'Neil, Rawi Hage, Micheal Ondaatje, and Margaret Atwood, who yesterday blasted the Harper Government for squashing the arts.

And speaking of squash....welcome to Today's Food Section! Alright, no squash recipes per se, but you can learn how to cook your duck and eat it too when chef Jacques Poulin from the Eastern Townships gives a duck cookery class at the Loblaws Cavendish. More answers from the experts can be gleaned from great Canadian chef Rob Feenie when the Globe and Mail online launches its live culinary discussion today at 1pm EST. Perhaps you've got questions about good versus bad bacterias in your food, perhaps you wish to debate the future of French cuisine in the global gastronomy pantheon, or perhaps you simply wanna take a cue from our friends at "...an endless banquet" and heat things up, Mexicali-style.
