Monday Media Montage: April 16, 2007

20070416_bldgblu.jpgI think the weather has slowed down my computer. Seriously, not only is today possibly the grossest weather day ever, but my computer is achingly slow. Both of those become my collective excuse for the delay in today’s media roundup. This past weekend lured us into the trap of thinking, “finally, the snow is gone for good.” Alas, we were all fooled once again. And today, the slushwads are angry and attacking citizens from the rooftops and the ground alike. If you’re walking anywhere, make sure you wear your rubber boots, and if you’re planning on taking a flight, make sure you call ahead – chances are you’re not going anywhere for a while.

Two weeks ago, Mayor Tremblay showed up on my street to point out litter and graffiti as he announced the city’s new campaign to force residents to clean up. Well, it seems many shop owners aren’t thrilled about the possibility of facing fines and are letting the mayor know about it.

jackie.jpgThis past weekend there were a few milestones and marches marked by Montrealers, some solemn and some in protest…Survivors of Rwandan genocide gathered and marched to mark a grim anniversary...60 years ago Sunday, Jackie Robinson was called up from Montreal Royals to play in the major leagues with the Dodgers. He broke the colour barrier in pro sports and this important day was celebrated across North America...Demonstrators marched here and in Quebec city to protest Quebec’s lack of animal trade regulations.

One of the first big budget movies set to shoot here this summer stars Evangeline Lilly and John Malkovitch and it's not called LOST.

And it seems as though the city can’t go a month without a hijab related controversy. The latest, once again involves youth sports – this time 11 year old tae kwon do competitors are banned from wearing hijab in a Longueuil tournament – even though they wear helmets over top AND were permitted to compete in the same tournament last year.

Speaking of de-graf cleaning campaigns, I saw an endorsed mural on Crassant, I mean Crescent, promoting the Grand Prix with the corporately sponsored approval of Budweiser, sprayed atop in all its urban shieky splendor. Ouch!

Ya, I myself am wondering who determines what constitutes graffiti in terms of makes the city appear 'unclean'. What if I tag my own house? Do I get fined for that?
