This Week in Blogs for April 4 - Habs Showdown

Posted by Scott / April 4, 2007

sticks-blog-one.jpgSay to anyone in this town that you are not a Habs fan and they immediately shoot back with, “what, are you a Leafs fan then?”

Even though I’m not, this little exchange shows that being a Leafs fan in Montreal is about as popular as herpes at a kissing booth. And it also shows that Habs fans often only think of the NHL in terms of these two long-time rivals.

The stage is set, then: this coming Saturday is the perfect time to get up from the hippest bar, theatre, mime-troupe meeting or other cultural event and get your ass onto your couch (with chips) for the most anticipated game of the year.

As local blogs are pointing out – the 8th and final playoff spot in the East could be decided by Saturday’s game between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens.

All the stars seem to be aligned perfectly. The Leafs’ season has been one that has lurched along, seeing them beat teams they shouldn’t have and lose to teams they should beat.

The Habs season has been more spectacular, with longer strings of wins followed by absolutely terrible performances. However, both teams are winning the games they need to win to stay in the hunt for the final playoff berth, and Saturday’s winner will go to the playoffs while the loser will be playing golf. That’s what losers do: play golf.

In my opinion, this is the best time of year to watch hockey, and matches such as this coming Saturday’s are what hockey is all about (well, almost what hockey is all about).

So I recommend you spend at least part of Saturday night intimately huddled around a TV, getting a thick sense of what this time of year is like for hockey fans. As a Montrealer, you owe it to yourself to crawl inside the mind of hockey fans, who have endured 80 of the 82 games this year, to see if the Habs can win 16 more to hoist the prize. Some would say they haven’t a hope in hell…others would say that’s exactly why the Habs win it so often.

Enjoy the game! See you Next Week in Blogs.

We are planning a party for this actually. We are going to have it buffet style at a friends house complete with wings, chips, salsa, pizza, spinach dip, hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, soda and mixed drinks! This is going to be even bigger and better then the Super Bowl party we threw back in February!

You're a disgrace to fans everywhere. Please take note that H I/O is the number one referring site to BBBR (which you typed incorrectly to begin with).
