This Week in Blogs for May 10 - Money

Posted by Scott / May 10, 2007

piggie-biggie.jpgThis Week in Blogs, Stevey posts about the cost of the Iraq War ($456 billion), and what, according to the Boston Globe, some of that money could be better used for.

Some suggestions from the Boston Globe include: free gasoline for every American for 1.2 years, 14.5 million free tuitions to Harvard University, and Medicare benefits for every American for a year. Also of note, Midnight Poutine’s financial analysts crunched some numbers and found that $456 billion would buy “a lot” of poutine.

More about Montreal and money…

Zeke’s Gallery posts that Myriam Bedard’s partner, Nima Mazhari, is charged with stealing 20 paintings, valued at $100,000. He has also apparently decided to utilize the services of a lawyer and not represent himself in court, despite being the victim of what he called “bureaucratic terrorism”. Red tape is everywhere, people.

Montreal City Weblog posts that the Montreal transit workers have decided to strike, beginning May 22. The main issue seems to be a discrepancy between what drivers and maintenance workers earn, a 2007 salary freeze, and the percentage increase per year after that. Note: present per-hour rates for STM workers appear to be between $21.31 and $23.05 an hour.

Interestingly, Coolopolis’ continuing posts about Montreal’s past brings an interesting financial perspective to light. Apparently in 1910, you could purchase a lot on Parc Avenue, between Bernard and Van Horne, for fifty cents a square foot. Perhaps before investing in property, we should all be investing in a Way-Back Machine.

Finally, from the “there’s-no-money-in-it” department, a reminder that tomorrow is your last day to vote in the Mirror’s Best of Montreal poll. Midnight Poutine is shamelessly promoting itself for the Best Blog category, and hopes you are too. As many politicians say, vote early, vote often. Entries must be received before midnight, May 11.

See you Next Week in Blogs.

As we should all be chum-chummy, don't you think it is fine time you stop ignoring my request to to include my blog in your 'Local Blogs' link section? I just may have to take your link off my page if we just can't all get along.

hmm. well, i just went through every comment from the last several months of "this week" posts, and can't find any requests to include your blog. so rest assured i'm not ignoring you. this is the first i've heard of it. however, we have been talking about updating that 'local blogs' section for a bit. high time we do that.

Thanks Scott in Media, I actually orignially made said request in the 'contact us' section. Sorry to sound pissy, friends?

Some thing that starting work on the poadsct in August is just a joke but I know that these things do take time. I've done a 13 Days of Halloween on my poadscts, the latest being the Blue Hot Gossip version, and I started work (mainly the writing) on that around the end of July. (Although there were many days I didn't do anything on it.)
