Review: THE BITTER END, a comedy webseries
But you know what's a mixed blessing? Watching a hilarious online sitcom and laughing your ass off even though it hurts so, so much to laugh because your mouth is still swollen from the surgery. This is what happened to me while reviewing The Bitter End, a locally produced web series that made me actually "LOL" so hard, so many different times.
Written by the stars of the show Daniel Beirne (Bernard) and Brent Skagford (Les), as well as Director Etan Muskat, all 6 chapters offer a refreshing blend of slapstick comedy mixed with clever storytelling. It's about two brothers forced to live together while one tries to get his life back together after getting out of rehab and the other pursues a writing career.
Each episode foreplays its audience with an intricate storyline before culminating in a massive climax. That's right, it's got a lot of sex jokes too, from the obscure internet porn references (BigNaturals.com...ya, I know you know what I'm talking about), all the way to the old confusing-wordplay-leads-to-sticky-situation routine. There are also SO MANY Die Hard references, including some footage of Hans Grueber falling to his death from the Nakatomi Tower intercut with an Ipod falling to its death from a balcony.
This show is basically a Montreal-Indie version of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, except the audience gets to connect a lot more with the main characters since there are only two of them. It's a nice blend of neurotic fast paced scenes along with cute/serious moments (which I won't give away...OMG reveal!) that really made the low production value un-noticeable by the 3 minute mark.
So if you like fun (you fucking better) and you like quotes such as "kick his fucking ass with poetry...slam his head off!", this show is for you.
