It's the end of November, so if you haven't prematurely put up holiday ornaments everywhere, you're in the minority. The festive season is upon us, and Montreal's citizens and commercial enterprises mark it in various ways. People smile more and walk in a wistful holiday fashion. Children become more irritating and greedy. Musicians record unlistenable versions of middling tunes. And, when it comes to decorations, different people display extremely varying aesthetic sensibilities, with results that are simultaneously wonderful and horrific.
As an afficionado of ugly architecture and poor design choices, I love no holiday more than Xmas. Valentine's Day and Hallowe'en feature good displays of obnoxious architectural bling, but Xmas is in its own category. People go to great lengths to deck their halls with atrocious choices, and some neighbourhoods are overflowing with kitschy excess, as people get into the holiday spirit by competing with each other to see who can ruin the exterior of their home the most.
In the coming weeks, I will do my best to document as many of these as I stumble upon, but it's quite possible that today's featured site will remain the standout. The location in question is the GoGo Lounge, a lame lounge/bar on St. Laurent (once favoured by Ben Affleck when he was shooting a film here), and the decoration they have chosen here is beautifully, gloriously awful. What could they have been thinking? Let us all respect the wondrousness of it.

From underneath, it becomes even more scary.

I. Love. That. Ball.
My god, such COMMITMENT to the tacky! It's a monument to GUSTO. And now it's gone and all they've got is three story long jail cell ropes of red lights, streaming down the building. Still pretty gusto-riffic, but the Ball, man... It looked like it could take out one of those trees in a stiff breeze.

I had great fun walking under that the other day. I have to admit I was afraid it might fall. Or would it rise into the sky. Maybe someone cut the ropes last night.

Is that someone's apartment above the bar? Isn't there a bit of a problem what with the windows being totally blocked and all?
