Mundial Montreal: Navigating the World of Agents, Managers, and Grants

Posted by Amie / November 21, 2013

Speed Dating at Mundial MontrealDid you know there's only one world music management organization in Montreal? Did you know that it's a co-op? The Coop les Faux-Monnayeurs headed by Jean-Francois Guidon was one of the organizations represented on a panel of industry players at this week's Mundial Montreal world music festival. Over the course of the multi-day event that piggybacks M for Montreal's indie fest, agents cruised festival reps including the annual Festival des Traditions du Monde de Sherbrooke, Luminato in Toronto, and Small World Music. Here are the pearls of wisdom every world music group needs to know:

Pheek and Diagraf talk about the first edition of Mutek_IMG

Posted by Frances / November 21, 2013

pheekThe first edition of Mutek_IMG is this weekend, from November 21st to 23rd. For all you enthusiasts who wait patiently for Mutek all year, there will now be some autumnal relief. Get your fill of digital arts with this new three-day visually focused event. I'm particularly interested in the daytime symposiums; check the schedule for a long list of events aimed at stimulating your curiosity, or "combining various forms of discussion, presentation and case studies featuring key players in the local creative community, and a nighttime artistic program that will echo themes explored during the day." Tonight at M for Montreal: Yamantaka//Sonic Titan And The Icy Storm of Noh-Wave

Posted by Mike_Z / November 20, 2013

Yamantaka Sonic TitanOne thing that stands out about Yamantaka//Sonic Titan --and is it a band or an art collective?--is the fusion of music and performance. Or is it art and philosophy? Mazzy Star to play Club Soda tonight

Posted by Shawn / November 17, 2013

Mazzy StarIt's been a surprisingly good year
for comebacks. My Bloody Valentine,
Queens Of The Stone Age and David Bowie returned with
albums that were not only better than expected (if one had
expectations to begin with) but also proved to be a continued
relevance to the current musical landscape. Mazzy
Star
can indeed be added to this list as they've
returned with their first album in 17 years, Seasons
Of Your Day. Best known for their single Fade
Into You
, the band has meticulously crafted another dreamy,
haunting and deliberately slow album. As a plus, Mazzy
Star's latest offers a refreshingly dynamic sound that
circumvents the loudness
war
audio compression issue ever-so-present on most of today's
records.

Barry Harris Trio to play Upstairs this Friday and Saturday

Posted by Jim_Little / November 12, 2013

Barry HarrisHow many out-of-town acts play two consecutive nights in a club these days? The Barry Harris Trio is one. The band is back at Upstairs on November 15 & 16 for two shows each night, one at 7 pm and the other at 9:45 pm. The pianist leader, a brilliant interpreter of jazz standards and bebop, is also a fine composer. He's got a solid rhythm section with him - Ray Drummond on bass, and on drums, Leroy Williams, who's been with Harris since 1967.
