Getting Off on The New Pornography

Posted by Robyn / October 11, 2005

We've all got our biases. I'm still coming to terms with mine, but I do know there's no true objectivity in reporting. So let me tell you this: I LOVE DAN BEJAR. Destroyer can do no wrong; I've gone completely rockist on this one. I've seen him solo and with bands and simply become more enamoured each time. Oh, and I'm from Vancouver. There, okay, THERE. So last night's Immaculate Machine / Destroyer / The New Pornographers show was like sweet sweet harmonious candy for my already (post-PopMtl) happily aching teeth. Love hurts, but it's a good pain, to roughly echo my colleague John's joy/pain description of the show.

Chronologically then: Immaculate Machine, from Victoria (Yes, I did my undergrad there - see all the biases, see them?) did not surprise me with their cuteness and their west-coast pop-punk style (a little Pacific Northwest diy-pop and some of SF's Aisler's Set in there, I thought - nice). They did surprise me with how tight their set was while still seeming comfortably casual. All three of them have different styles and take turns singing lead on different songs (hm, what band does this remind me of?...) - they're all really into the music, which is what counts in bringing it all together. I was even a little emotionally overcome by one song about a relationship that didn't work out. A little bit of fun, a little bit of sadness, hello my cup of tea.

Now, Dan. Lots of older Destroyer songs from Thief and even City of Daughters, lots of Streethawk, though of course a shorter set than I desired, but that was to be expected. Hell, if the show began and ended with "The Sublimation Hour" (some awesome "al-righ-igh-igh-ight"s) I would've been fine. Sure he was following his whiskey with beer, sure he was wearing the same shirt I saw him in last time (I swear), but if that is what it takes, if that is what it takes... I admit that Destroyer is an acquired taste and that the not everyone in the crowd was into it, but given time I am confident that everyone will see the light one day, possibly prone on their deathbeds, suddenly bolting upright, jaw dropped at the true nature of poetry in rock, as Bejar belts "Well, you had the best legs in a business built for kicks." Yeah, it was awesome and made me love the world as much as I (sometimes) hate it.

And then The New Pornographers! Whatever, they blew everyone away, clearly. People even danced! And they played for a long time, plus two encores, the second of which was a blazing verson of the single that got them notice in the first place: "Letter to an Occupant." It was a rapturous finale, with Neko Case's voice like a direct connection to whatever holy thing it is you might believe in these days.

Yes! I was hoping someone more Destroyer-knowing was there. And, actually, I saw you at Blizzarts after, but I somehow missed you before I was able to say hi. Hi?

Hi! Ah, my Destroyer Love finds more purpose beyond itself... I wish that I were nerd-cool enough to actually jot down a setlist. Weird that I missed you - I was even wearing my (shock, horror) glasses!

i saw the Destroyer, New Pornographers with Neko Case show at the Commodore in Vancouver--great show...Dan was so drunk--he was like, "what song is this?"...stumbling-holding his mike in one hand a la presley and a beer in the other...pretty hilarious. i'll never forget watching ange-aimee do the 2 step with Maceo Parker at the Commadore...
