Interview: Ladies Luncheon

Posted by Drew / October 1, 2005

By Anna Phelan

Q: Ladies Luncheon is quite gimmick-y. Why this shtick?

We three are very excited about capitalizing on the craftiness of our foremothers – generally grandmas and great-grandmas, Aunts Myras, Betties, and Margeries. Tipping our proverbial hats to the bygone eras of typically female innovations – knitting, baking, sewing. We wanted to be a part of the movement toward rediscovering those dominantly female art forms that has taken shape since the mid-nineties – knitting circles, baking parties, quilting, making your own feminine hygiene products – stuff that gets back to creating a female community and connecting with one another.

Q: The subjects you address in your songs contain a lot of pop culture references. What inspires you?

We love being able to address topics that have generally been considered taboo for women of elder generations. Topics that would give you a bad reputation around town or that were only acceptable to delve into if you spoke about it through your “programs” a la As the World Turns - i.e., sex, monogamy vs. non-monogamy, std’s, griping the good gripe. It’s also so normal and acceptable to hear funny guy-lead bands sing about chicks – Tenacious D (Hard Fucking). It’s time that ladies call ‘em like they see ‘em about dudes. Don’tcha Touch Me While I’m Sleeping, Liar, Gal About Town and the like are our way of saying, “Hey guys, we know and we’re on to you”, publicly. And not just about dudes, but about things that we find funny or interesting or bizarre in general. The Very Sad Melody of Mary-Kate and Ashley, Dysinto Ray, Marathon Runner, The Virgin Mary Eats at Wendy’s – all written about what happens to catch our imagination at that moment.

Q: By adding “Lees” to the end of your names, you’ve created stage personas. What’s it like to have a secret identity?

The Ladies Luncheon persona is something we find empowering, and find ourselves slipping into in our normal lives whenever we needs us a bit of courage to deal. We loves our alter egos like a lemon luvs squeezin’.

Q: Cucumber Samiches – the only crustless sammie?

Oh my, oh my, where shall we begin? Although the crustless cuke sammie certainly reigns supreme amongst the high tea set, we enjoy us a good egg salad sammie or a smoked salmon and cream cheese sammie. If you are going to serve a straight up cucumber with the crusts neatly deleted – do not forget the watercress, that is essential and we like to mix a dab of mayo into the cream cheese mixture for spread-ability.

Q: Can you recommend any other delicacies for a Sunday afternoon high tea?

The Devilled Egg – Underrated and totally delicious. It’s a snap to make and turns heads at parties. People are always super impressed with this dish for some odd reason. Whenever we show up to parties with a platter of these delicious delights people are like, “Whoa, who brought the devilled eggs? – I love these things!”
