Keith Richards Hangs up Guitar to Pursue Science

Posted by Hannah / November 1, 2005

richards.jpg On his way home from a large press conference in Utah last week, Tom Hudson, the director of the McGill University and Genome Quebec Innovation Centre, found himself in an elevator with Keith Richards. Hudson is part of an international team that had just made a major scientific announcement. The two men nodded at each other, and presumably looked at their feet or watched the numbers light up in the elevator car in awkward silence, too aware of their differences to strike up a conversation.

Soon another passenger stepped on the elevator and looked at the Rolling Stones guitarist. "Are you Keith Jagger?" he asked. "Half," replied Richards.

A fourth passenger entered the elevator, looked at Richards, then at Hudson, then at his copy of the Globe and Mail. "Wow. Two famous people in one elevator."

Richards turned to Hudson, a middle-aged balding man with wire-rimmed glasses. "Who are you?" he asked. "Oh, I'm just a scientist," replied Hudson, in a classic scientist understatement.

Richard smiled. "I experiment too."
