Stuff To Do

Posted by MP / November 10, 2005

cdsetfree.jpgAnother week, another weekend. But after giving all of your available brainpower to the Man all week, what do you have left for deciding what to do with your free time? I'll tell you what: Not much. Yup, the Man got everything good, and you pretty much feel like your friend decapitated you and used your head like a bowling ball. Don't worry, though, Midnight Poutine is here to sort through the various weekend options for you as your head rolls uselessly along the boards towards the pins. Read on for our picks from tonight through Monday. Strike!

Local rock n' soul band the Sunday Sinners, featuring a pedigree that includes the Sexareenos and the Del Gators, will try to flatten Casa Del Popolo. You can watch for $8. Bring a hard hat.

Bell Orchestre, Clogs and Snailhouse play at Theatre Plaza St-Hubert - a night of harmonies, long drawn-out notes that'll make you drool (in a bad or good way), and a respectable level of cuteness.

Later, MP's own Roxanne Arsenault's DJ alter ego spins rock and weirdness at Zoobizarre until the wee hours. To complicate things, MP's own Mike Irvine's DJ alter ego, the Big M, will be spinning 80s punk and hardcore at the Jupiter Room. We can't choose, but, fortunately, we've cloned ourselves.

Worn: Fashion Journal Launch - 8pm on, at Pharmacie Esperanza. Wear that thing you really want to wear and come to party, get copies of the journal and good Worn gear, in a cozy, good-music, cover-free environment.

Wait, this isn't rock: MP's intrepid science writer Hannah Hoag's DJ alter ego Double H attends the McGill Bioethics Conference: Living Ethics, from Stem Cells to Life Extension. There is a debate on the ethics of stem cell research that is open to the public. Also Saturday.

Andrew Byrd and Oh Bijou! play Main Hall.

Moondata Productions jam it new school at O Patro Vys with the latest installment of LAB Projects, this time featuring Unireverse on synths, drum machines and moogs, the ubiquitous former Unicorn Jaime Thompson on drums , plus others, plus the usual gang.

Some other stuff is probably happening too.

The Immortal Lee County Killers and Fat Possum (Epitaph's great blues label) artists Thee Shams put a curse on Hemisphere Gauche.

If that's not crusty enough for your day of rest, DayGlo Abortions play El Salon.

Go see American Analog Set, possibly Austin, TX's finest, who signed to trendy T-dot label Arts & Crafts and have recently been making weird noises about not touring any more. I recently described them as Stereolab with acoustic guitars and comprehensible lyrics, which is maybe half-accurate.
