Made Out of Magic - The Grates 06/24 [video]

If you haven’t yet seen The Grates play, you obviously don’t care about feeling overall life satisfaction, do you? Personally their Saturday night show left me feeling like I was marveling at the dew left on my toes after running barefoot through a field of daisies. This band is the epitome of “must-see”, an ultimate non-guilty pleasure that permits you to fall in love with the cutesy three on stage while honestly rockin’ out to the great (grate?) off-beat garage pop gems.

After over 3 years of EP releases (recorded in the guitarist’s shed, no less), Australia’s The Grates have finally released their first professionally recorded album. Gravity Won't Get You High won’t be available in North America until July 10th though, but lucky for us a few of the 14 enthusiastic tracks are available for listens on their myspace page.

Sadly for us, The Grates’ Main Hall show was only an opening gig for the Immaculate Machine. After watching front-lady Patience Hodgson get down off the stage to lithely twirl a pink ribbon around us fans, there were audible whimpers and visible tears in the crowd when the house lights came on so soon. This Aussie trio (plus new keyboardist?) is possibly the cutest thing that ever happened to indie rock making them one of those bands where seeing them live makes you appreciate their recorded work so much more.

You will become a better person after seeing one of their shows and life will suddenly seem less unfair. Infectious smiles from the land down under will do that you.

Check out the vid for uplifting magical powers.

What? Don't all visiting Australians get their picture taken at Frites Alors on St-Laurent eating smoked meat poutine after performing at the Main Hall? Sheesh.

I'm charming and resourceful.

Great article! I like the video as well. They're the nicest band and everyone should see them live at least once.

Gravity Won't Get You High was delayed though and won't be released until August 29 in North America.

That picture was taken by Hans of Ottawa. He came to see the Grates with us, and eat poutine with us and the Grates. They are nothing short of awesome, and fun to be around. We actually also had dinner with them at Cafe Esperanza on St-Laurent before the show. the whoel shabang of pictures can be found on http://www.flickr.com/photos/rsharpe/sets/72157594176934748/

I've seen the Grates twice, they performed in front of 800 people and then 50 people. They gave it everything they had BOTH times and BOTH times, EVERYONE in the room had the time of their lives. They truly are great performers.
