Weekend Playlist 06/22 - 06/25 [Podcast]

Posted by MP / June 22, 2006

Big changes are afoot here in the music wing of Midnight Poutine HQ. Last week we assembled mp3s of bands playing sure-bet shows around the city into a convenient listening package. This week, we're adding extra value in the form of someone talking! The expanded, more-Podcast-like Weekend Playlist, hosted by Jeremy Morris, will now permit you to know what you're listening to.

Anyway, on to the picks. Tonight (Thursday), our top pick is a Green Room show featuring local act Snailhouse, and Ontario-ites Kat Burns & the Forest City Lovers and Oh Bijou, all of whom play sweet, sorta folky stuff that makes you want to make out with everybody. If you bought a ticket to the Streets and Lady Sovereign, I reckon you'll be going to that at the Spectrum. Finally (and this could be chronologically final, too, since Club Lambi shows tend to stray towards the later hours), the Vinyl Republik compilation launch provides you with some pop action courtesy of Hexes & Ohs and Pete Samples.

Friday, the Suoni festival has a Constellation Records presentation of Excepter, Feu Thérèse and Thames. Experimentalists rejoice! Blondie (yes, that Blondie -- oh, unless you're thinking of the wife of Dagwood Bumstead, in which case, no) also plays Metropolis.

On Saturday, checkez-out Mint Records' Immaculate Machine at the Main Hall with Australia's the Grates. We interview Immaculate Machine here, and we also submit to you that the Grates are among the most fun bands to watch ever in the history of the world.

Sunday finds more moody Suoni stuff at Sala, with the excellent Black Ox Orkestar launching their new record along with what we're pretty sure is a pretty legendary NYC-based puppet show.

Right, so, have fun, and don't do anything we wouldn't do.

Weekend Playlist order (clickez here to listen):

Kat Burns and The Forest City Lovers - Oh Humility
Ohbijou - Misty Eyes
Snailhouse - Birds and Bees
Vinyl Republik - The Chase
Lady Sovereign - Hoodie
Hexes & Ohs - You're a Hologram
Immaculate Machine - Broken Ship
The Grates - Sukkafish
Black Ox Orkestar - Bukharian
Feu Thérese - Mademoiselle Gentleman

All songs on the playlist are from legitimate sources on the web (i.e., band or festival or label websites, and never mp3 sites of dubious legality). Still, if your band doesn't want your song on our playlist, email info AT midnightpoutine DOT ca and well remove it promptly.

Five times yesterday, and now we're running into each other in cyberspace? When will it end?
