Comets on Fire, The Donkeys, Panopticon Eyelids

Not only do Comets on Fire have an awesome name but they make awesome music and put on a helluva show. This is a gushing review. I'd been looking forward to Wednesday night's show for a couple of months, since it popped up on my ALERT ALERT sometimes crappy radar. Yes, they TORE. I could've endured at least another hour of it too. And paid for it in the morning. We all have sacrifices to make. There is a greater good.

I also had this totally insane day of good stuff (edumacation, bike riding, music making, roti) and crappy stuff (DOORED in daylight on side street, ow, rrrgh) leading up to the show. Consequently, but due to good stuff at least, I missed Panopticon Eyelids. But was told by a trusted source: "They were great! Buy their 7-inch!" Okay!

I did seeThe Donkeys though. At first they seemed more noisey, with promising synthesizer action and then they moved into more straight-up metal-influenced rock with a few less-straight-up twists + loud. I did not leave, but had a few moments of wanting to for whatever reasons. They do have an obvious fan base, I can tell you that - they might just be your thing.

So then then then, Comets on Fire. This was one of those shows with a heavy guy vibe, as are many shows of the louder, more metal-noise-drone (uh, etc.) kind of stuff. But I've also been noticing more women showing up, and that makes me happy - I like equality, and I also like that more people are appreciating this music. Plus, I dig the scene; it can be fun to hang out. But I am mostly there to listen to loud music and unintentionally get metal neck.

Comets on Fire started loud. They ended louder, in what I called the greatest encore of the year. I'm going to stand by that, sure. There was much scream-singing and Blistering Guitar (but no aggravating guitar wankery! there are pretty much no reasons not to adore Ben Chasny, srsly, even if his main website isn't working right now) and heavy bass, Box-of-stuff derived Oscillations, and fucking ridiculously great drumming (amazing feats of stamina - he even played piano for a couple songs, which was great.)

Heavy, real, unpretentious, solid, everything you need. Or everything I needed then and there. It made me put both hands straight up in the air and say whoooo! Click this blurry image for an approximation of what it was like, minus the totally crappy sound from my camera's "microphone" (i mean, turn your speakers down a notch to avoid distortion pain.)

Comets on Fire have several records, some of which I have been listening to for the past couple days. It makes adjusting to autumn mornings easier, or at least, more interesting. Yes, sometimes I like to tear a hole in Thursday morning, thank you.
