Jon Rae: Preachin' The Gospel (Club Lambi, 10/13)

There’s just something about old fashioned spirituals. Maybe it’s mankind’s deep seated belief in a higher power, or maybe it’s just that spirituals have the ability to rise above the fray of standard indie-rock fare, but whatever the case, they definitely have a hold on me, and Jon Rae and The River exploited that hold to its fullest potential last Friday at Club Lambi. A full blown gospel band masquerading as indie rock, Toronto’s Jon Rae knows how to hit those emotional buttons we all want hit so dearly when we go to see live music.

While only marginally spiritual (I think they only mentioned God a handful of times, and I only heard Jesus’ name once) there is a sincerity and dedication to the music that is more Sunday Morning Church choir than it is Saturday Night bar scene.

During their 45 minute set (which may have been the night’s only short coming. I mean, come on. 45 minutes?!), there was not one snide remark, not one hipster pose, not a single sneer of irony. There was just good old fashioned countrified gospel, with Jon Rae and female vocalist Ann (last name unknown, but does it really matter?) belting out one revivalist heart-breaker after another.

With tips of the hat to Ike and Tina, Townes Van Zandt, and what sounded to me like The Blues Brothers’ opener “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” Jon Rae and the River know exactly where they are coming from, and from the sounds of their newest album “Knows What You Need,” they know exactly where they are going. And God bless ‘em for it: we all need a little dose of churchin’ now and then.

That was an amazing show! Their uplifting energy is instantly contagious. The acapella sing-along at the end, made two of my friends cry of joy.
