Staue Park Homecoming @ Green Room

Posted by Nika / October 11, 2006

After spending the last month touring accross Canada in a smelly band-van promoting their new EP, home-grown indie rockers Statue Park are happy to be home. They'll be playing the Green Room tomorrow night (Thursday the 12th). It's an early show, so no dilly-dallying! Starting at 9pm sharp with The Expatriates (Ottawa/Montreal) and Intensive Care (Montreal) in tow.

If you're lucky, they may have For those about to passively observe, we tacitly acknowledge you on sale at the merch table. I inder if that's the longest title ever created for a 4-song EP.

Who/What are/is Staue Park? They've made that part easy, keep reading the official autobiography...

We met the old-fashioned way: old friends, ads in the paper, post-breakup garage sale fundraisers. The way bands used to meet.

We made music that way too. Four guys, no rules, each feeding off the other. We used drums, laptops, guitars, old synths and amps, our voices too; anything we could coax a sound out of.

Then we needed a studio, so we built one with our bare hands and crammed a house in the back. It was six months of sweating and swearing, hauling drywall up four flights of narrow Montreal stairs to our top-floor warehouse. And because wed crowned ourselves construction workers, we wrote about buildings, and when we stumbled across a stack of old urban planning journals behind a delapidated wall, we wrote about that as well.

This band was out of the gates back in 2003, when Toby started writing under the name Statue Park. He cribbed that particular moniker from the Communist theme park that he visited on the outskirts of Budapest, a field of Stalinist monuments and scarlet fever. Jon got pulled in by an ad for keys and guitar with the promise of a two week tour of the States; Mat was drafted from the ashes of old high school bands after five years of incommunicado; and Gabe needed a change of pace from his string-wrangling days and traded in his guitar picks for drum sticks.

In short: there's a clubhouse, there's an EP, we made them, kill kill kill, Statue Park.
