Try Not to Enjoy Yourself - Camera Obscura @ Sala

It's hard not to enjoy a Camera Obscura show. I tried. I have been relatively unimpressed with their latest CD, Let's Get Out of this Country. Despite repeated listens and serious urging from people way more in the know than me, I've still not fully latched on to it. It's fun, it has some great riffs and melodies, but I'm just not sure what all the fuss is about.

Despite low expectations, after seeing the sold at show at Sala Rossa on Monday night, I started to see the appeal.

cosala2.jpgLead singer Tracyanne Campbell has an utterly captivating voice. Her arresting Scottish accent only amplifies its intensity. There's an insane pleasantness to whatever she sings. The song can be about heartbreak or loneliness but the melody is always optimistic. The band's stage presence is relatively uninspiring but everyone plays each song enthusiastically, loading their individual parts with positivity (check out the bass riffs for the last three songs on the album...tell me that isn't the essence of happiness).

The crowd cheered happily when favourites like "Hey, Lloyd I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" and "Let's Get out of This Country" came on, but the band has more depth than that. Even the songs that sparked less recognition were just as good. Particularly strong was the moody "Books Written for Girls" from their last album.

Label mates The Essex Green opened the show. They were a perfect fit with the headliners. So much so that I wondered what the point was, if Camera Obscura was going to come on and do the same thing only better. That being said, if you're still hankering for happy good time pop rock after going through Camera Obscura's album, check out the Essex Green; they'll deliver just that.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I should probably go and give Let's Get Out of This Country another spin.

Oddly enough, I listened to Lets get Out Of This Country for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed it. They've been one of those bands I've always meant ot give a try and never got round to it. Too bad I missed the show.
