The Black Angels @ The Main Hall, 11/04

As soon as the piped-in music faded and gave way to the 6 man outfit on stage at the Main Hall last night, the droning started. No, no, not droning from the crowd, but the drone created by Jennifer Raines keyboards, affectionately credited as “the drone machine”. It filled the hall and stuck with us until the last psychedelic, buzzed-out note of the closing song. When the droning finally ended, it was kind of sad ‘cause you kind of really dug it.

If you don’t already know about the Black Angels, their Velvet Underground affliction (the band name actually was ripped straight from VU’s song “Black Angel's Death Song”) and their knack for flat–out paranoid psych-rock, you’d be hard up to grasp the concept that these far-left brooding tripsters are from Texas. But remember, Roky Erikson was from Austin too and their hood in East Austin can be quite sketchy.

With help on the sitar from High Dials ex-bassist (and ex-sitarist) Rishi Dhir, The Black Angels opened with a 20 minute number rich in ominous grooves and reverb. Unfortunately for us, the Main Hall suffers from muddy and sometimes ridiculously bad sound. Blame it on the system, the soundman or the hall itself, but it’s a problem. For a band like the Black Angels, it’s a downright shame. The layers of churning guitars and intricate vocals we fell in love with on their first and only full-length album Passover were completely buried in a wall of sound. In turn, this lack of crisp sound quality drained the audience from any energy, to the point that some kids actually sat their asses down in front of the stage, as if the Main Hall suddenly turned into a commune where people sit on floors at rock shows. Who the heck sits on the floor in front of a Black Angels show? For all I know, the floor squatters were why we were all listless, or maybe it was all the pot smoking. Either way, check out Passover then catch one of their shows at a better venue than the Main Hall.

Um, don’t do drugs. (Hi mom!)

^_^ Thursday was amazing, and all you that didn't aenttd really missed some serious fun. The tournaments didn't happen though because of a random power surge, but it didn't matter save for the one guy that I overheard saying that he didn't know why he was still there if there wasn't going to be a tournament. It's like tournament gaming is his job rather than fun P.P.S Lock me out of the building again and I swear I'll show your eyes just how pointy the guns on the risk units REALLY are.
