DJ FOOD has bite...hmmm, tasty...

Around the time I first got into DJ Food, the buzz word on everyone's lips was 'trip hop.' The album I listened to, Recipe for Disaster was being hailed as a funky exemplar of the genre. It was serious music for the groove inclined.

But standing close to a stack of speakers at Le National yesterday, during the DJ Food & DK Solid Steel show, I started rethinking that label. Perched on the Amplifiers were a bunch of beer bottles that one by one started crashing to the floor as the vibrations bounced around the room. Fuck trip hop. DJ Food has bite.

DJ Food, for those who don't know, are the trailblazing U.K. collective whose initial aim was to 'feed the dj' with loops, breaks and beats. Originally it was the side project of Ninja Tune's Coldcut duo. Now it is headed up by dj stalwart, Strictly Kev. Kev and DK (Darren Knott) performed their latest cut-up/mash-up/mix Now Listen Again! Watching them onstage, working their gear was a little like watching Igor and Dr. Frankenstein flipping switches and activating gears to create their creature.

And yet, this was no clinical DJ show. It's hard not to like Strictly Kev. An unabashedly nerdy bloke with a goofy grin and specs, he's a far cry from the stone-faced dj playing cool beats. Kev and DK, bathed in light, surrounded by gear, infectiously shaking their heads and mouthing lyrics. looked more like a couple of teenagers throwing a house party, than the solid pros they are.

And the audio collage they created was inspired. Snatches of songs like Ram Jam's Black Betty, Jane's Addiction's Been Caught Stealing, Purple Haze (by Johnny Jones and the King Casuals), as well as remixes of DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and The Cinematic Orchestra made me alternately want to shake it or sit down in blissed-out contemplation.

If only I weren't an elderly curmudgeon who was feeling sleepy before midnight...when I left the party DJ Food showed no signs of stopping. But I guess no matter how good a feast is, you gotta go when you've had your fill.
