Inword at Club Lambi: You Can Leave Your Toque On

In the pantheon of Montreal’s homegrown music scene, reggae shows have about as much hipster cache as two guys from St. Leonard ordering bottle service at Buena Notte. But even though dreads and earnestness don’t often make the Montreal radar, the local reggae scene is one of the city’s greatest untapped resources.

Saturday night I was lucky enough to capture one of the best, a band called Inword playing at Club Lambi. Right off the bat, it was clear that this wasn’t standard hipster fare at Sala Rossa.

First off, people were actually moving in rhythm with the music. I think it’s called dancing. Secondly, dreads, toques, do-rags and requests for rolling papers were ubiquitous. While the get-up associated with reggae fans turns some off the music, there is something undeniably satisfying about leaving your toque on while moving from Montreal winter to the dance floor. And a dance floor it truly is.

Inword played non-stop for over two hours, and the energized concert goers were bobbing, grinding, swaying, and generally grooving the entire time. While Inword has a strong spiritual message, most fans seemed more into the luscious sound of their six-piece band than the shout outs to lord Jah. Front man Jah Faith’s incredible vocals and lyrical abilities transcends the specifics of his spiritual beliefs, so that even though their website proclaims emphatically “Seek the Kingdom Within!”, I didn’t feel like I was being implored to do much more than have a good time and forget the trappings of the world outside.

Inword is best experienced live. A visit to their MySpace after the show left me disappointed, as I had been hoping to recapture some of the spark from their show. “Neva Knew”, the headlining track on their site, is a great song that brought the house down on Saturday night. By the time they were back for their second encore, which included a tribute to the recently fallen South African reggae legend Lucky Dube, they had played a string of five or six incredible songs, each one original and vibrant in a way that other monotonic reggae could only hope for.

They play again on Saturday, Nov. 24th, at Divan Orange, and that intimate venue will no doubt be as packed as Club Lambi was on Saturday. If you get a chance to go, expect to dance, have a good time, and leave your toque on.
