One of Canada’s best known hardcore bands, Alexisonfire was playing at the Metropolis last night. The St-Catharines, Ontario band brought to Montreal an interesting choice of supporting characters: California emo-alt act Saosin, and middle-finger brandishing Anti-Flag, from Pittsburgh.

I’ve seen Saosin live before two or three times, so to me, it was just another round of the good old Taste of Chaos bit. Anti-Flag’s antics tire me, and although I did enjoy some of their songs from the comfort of my seat back there, most of it was pretty neutral. I was all in for the main act: Alexisonfire.

Speaking of which, I have to say, they put on one hell of a show. More than anything, the performance is loud, loud and louder. I was on the floor by their second song, and the crowd was borderline enraged. Due to my being short, I couldn’t see most of what was happening on stage, but the band sounded great. Dallas Green’s clear vocals and George Pettit’s screaming are a match made in hardcore heaven.

The band opened with “You Burn First” and played a wide variety of songs from all three albums, from old singles “No Transitory”, “Pulmonary Archery”, to newer ones like “Rough Hands”.

All in all, it was an intense show that was well worth the time, energy and sweat. One of the best “big venue” shows of the year as far as I’m concerned.
