Cobra Starship Busts White (White Hot, That Is) Moves at Le Studio, Jan. 22

20080122_cobrasharship01.jpg I’ve got a confession to make: an infallible way to make me fall head over heels is to grow curly hair, wear American Apparel gear daily, and officially change your name to Gabe Saporta.

One more: Saporta’s dance-rock/hip-hop project Cobra Starship is the best live act I’ve seen in a long, long time. The band was made famous in 2006 by their song “Bring It” from the Snakes On A Plane soundtrack, and have recently released their second album, ¡Viva La Cobra!, inarguably their best to date. Saporta was not made so famous as the lead singer/bassist of the New Jersey emo-punk band Midtown.

Who needs sad-eyed boys in stupidly tight jeans, anyway? Saporta was clearly born to sport Adidas track jackets.

Never mind the fact that your average attendee was still in high school. Or that the venue ran out of “Paid” stamps and resorted to marking everyone’s hands with black “X” marks (oh, the irony – five bucks says they had no clue it’s a symbol of the straight edge movement). Or even that the first opener band, We The Kings, were a total rip-off of powerpop stars Boys Like Girls. Never mind some underaged kid spilling his beer on me.

Because the moment Cobra Starship hit the stage, everybody in the room started dancing, and did not stop for the next hour and a half. As did their charismatic, permanently smiling frontman. Objectively speaking, Gabe Saporta probably isn’t particularly hot. Looks-wise, he actually –disturbingly enough– reminds me a little of Borat. But he makes up for all of it with his incredible stage presence – and his amazing club dance moves. As much as he aims at entertaining his audience, you can tell that the guy in the room who’s having the most fun is Saporta himself.

The set was composed mostly of tracks off ¡Viva La Cobra! and included a few select favourites from their debut, While The City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets. The crowd sang along to every word.

If you were not at Le Studio last night, you’ve missed out.
