Plants and Animals CD Launch Party

It’s quite clear that Montreal-based rock outfit Plants and Animals know how to put on a good show. The exuberant three-piece, who held a launch party for their album Parc Avenue last night, were in good company: La Sala Rosa was packed (making for a twenty-minute wait at the bar) and there was a positive, supportive buzz in the air.

The band, who opened on Wolf Parade’s summer tour, has grown into a substantial headliner in their own right. They got the set off to a good start with the hyperspeed funk of Mercy, even inviting a gaggle of groupies onto the stage to clap, sing and dance idiosyncratically.

Plants and Animals do an admirable job of making their shows stand out in the indistinguishable sea of indie rock: they played in front of palms and other assorted greenery (yes, plants), their songs incorporate rather intricate guitar lines, and they even brought in a young child, up well past his bedtime, to sing a coda that would have fit well in Les Choristes.

The downfall was that the sound system was a little off. There were more than a few reverb and distortion flashes, prompting at least one band member to scowl in the direction of the soundboard. Also, some of singer Warren Spicer’s lyrics are a little half-baked (“It takes a good friend to tell you you’ve got your head up your ass”), but this is forgivable for a young band. Plants and Animals will, as their name suggests, continue to grow and soon sit alongside Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade in the pantheon of Montreal indie gods.
