Caribou nights @ la Tulipe

The night started off with FUCK BUTTONS opening up. A two piece experimental noise group who formed in Bristol, England. Fuck Buttons straddle you between the wall of sound that lies between the beginning of destruction and the end of birth. This grand noise will fondle you into a state of immersed euphoria or pain. I think I was on the pain side. After a sudden (and joyful end) they broke off and made way for the Cairbou set up. Just so you know - formerly called Manitoba, Caribou's lead crooner Daniel Snaith opted to change the name of his affair when Dick Manitoba threatened to sue. Ok, who knew the name was so popular and who the hell is Dick Manitoba? These thoughts crossed my mind after hours on Easter Sunday eve. I have to say one of the better things to hail from Dundas, Ontario, Caribou played to a mish-mash crowd psychedelic rockers, hippes, and music lovers. As the smoke curling up around the dimly-lit heads in the audience. The POP ART deco prints flashing in the back round. They unleashed a trippy, A/V blast from the past that flipped just about everybody's switch. Layers of flute loops, bells, drum fills and warped strings cushion Snaith's blissed-out harmonies on organized-chaos jams.

Early in the set, they ripped through the pounding, swirling "Sandy" and their velvety single "She's The One". Later, they whipped through Andorra's opener, "Melody Day", with some flutters of new tracks interspersed around it. Thanks to the simple and non flashy visuals and relatively little chatter, the whole show felt a little surreal, personal and warm. Nothing disrupts the album's beautifully choreographed mess which was so gentle to see in live. Far out man.
