Going Bananas with Bonobo @ Club Lambi - 08/03/02

Last night a few friends and I slunk into Club Lambi, tired as all hell from the 5th edition of Nuit Blanche. I opted to cover U.K. composer/DJ Bonobo (real name Simon Green) based on the songs "Flutter" and "Pick Up" from a PS2 snowboarding game called SSX on Tour. In other words, the little knowledge I had about Bonobo came from hours of button mashing, circa last year. Plus, I'm amused by the smattering of acts out there that reference primates. (Arctic Monkeys, Simian Mobile Disco, Gorillaz, anyone?)

Bonobo first made his (modest) name as a downtempo artist with 2000's Animal Thoughts. He signed to Ninja Tune in 2001 and released 2003's Dial 'M' For Monkey, where "Pick Up" and "Flutter" were lifted from. His music has been described as "organic," "subliminally seductive," and "the antithesis of annoying." I pegged Bonobo for an easy listen after a night of partying, but ended up getting musically punk'd in a very, very good way.

By the time Bonobo took control, the energy in the room was boiling over. The guy knows his way around a good bassline, and the stuff he played defied the usual constraints of a "downtempo" label. Make no mistake: Buddha Bar rip-off, he ain't. Blending material from Dial 'M' For Monkey and the more recent Days to Come (2006), in which vocals are used for the first time, Bonobo tweaked the whole set to a groovy new level. People were hopped up on good vibes all around.

That's not to say the show didn't have any problems. There was another guy spinning up on stage for an hour and a half before Bonobo finally got on, even though no opener was specified beforehand. He got people into the right mood, but you could tell everyone was getting antsy after a while. And if you've been to Club Lambi, you'll also know it gets hot as a crotch up there real quick. Yet, it's always a huge boon when an artist can get the place moving with nothing but a turntable set and his own sweet self.

DJ Andy Williams was the "other guy" you mentioned that was spinning at the show. I enjoyed his session and the rest of the hot evening!

Thanks for clarifying that, Massimo! Let's hope Bonobo comes back real soon so we can go bananas again.

Everything about sex is cliched to sooemne so i wouldn't be too worried about that. The thing about the banana image is that the eyes sell it. I believe that's you, Eleanor; & you make what might be an old Benny Hill joke i'm old school Australian into something appealingly saucyIt IS possible to over-analyse an image & miss what's staring you in the faceGood luck on the KickstarterRobert
