Sia Must Find Better Supporting Acts @ Les Saints

Posted by Gabby / March 5, 2008

mp-sia.jpgSia Furler, better known as Sia, is an Australian singer/songwriter majorly known for her work with downtempo superstars Zero 7. She released three solo albums, Healing is Difficult (2000), Color the Small One (2002) and Some People Have Real Problems (2008), spawning hits such as "Breathe Me" and "Where I Belong".

When I heard she was playing at Les Saints last night, I put my fist down, declaring I had to go. I'd never been to Les Saints before, and I have to say, that is one odd-looking venue. There are a lot of seats, but also a lot of awkward empty space. There's also that creepy dark corner that I didn't even approach for fear of being kidnapped or raped.

The doors opened thirty minutes late, and the show started an hour late. By the time Har Mar Superstar took the stage, I was a little upset and sick of waiting. I soon became simply sick. Allow me to describe the scene.

Har Mar Superstar is fronted by a balding Ron Jeremy lookalike, with an ego larger than his beergut and a very unfortunate tendency to strip. By the end of the painfully long set, he was strutting around and doing pelvis thrusts in his underwear. "MONTREAL! YOU FUCKING LOVE US!" ... Right.

If this guy got laid last night, there is something terribly, terribly wrong with the world.

After another 45 minutes of waiting, Sia finally took the stage. Let me just point out the fact that she looks like a doll: short bobbed hair and cute little dress, child-like mimics and a huge smile plastered on her face between every song. Well, despite her appearance, Sia has a lot more going for her than a doll-like physique. Her voice live is simply amazing, breathy and nasally, but also powerful and compelling at the same time. I haven't heard a female artist sound so good live in forever.

Sia opened the set with "Buttons", walking on stage in glow-in-the-dark costumes and white gloves. The set was decorated with odd neon sculptures shaped like flowers that actually lit up in different colors. When she finished with "Breathe Me", I was getting shivers up and down my spine.

Thank you, Sia. You rule. Please bring better bands with you next time.

I was at that show. Very happy to be able to say that I saw her way back when. And, I have to say, I thought Har Mar was an absolute hoot!
