Sunshine Pours over Montreal When Matt Costa is in Town

On Thursday night, I had the luck to attend Matt Costa's headlining show at the beautiful National, with Jonathan Rice opening. I say luck, because there was quite a crowd in there. Thankfully, they had just opened the balcony when we got to the venue, so I got myself a nice little seat.

First, let's just precise that back then, I only knew one song by Jonathan Rice, and that it was from the OC soundtrack ("So Sweet"). Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it really doesn't represent the artist. Mister Rice actually traded the full band and violins of questionable origins for an acoustic guitar, and performed an entirely acoustic set.

Now, while obviously an acoustic set isn't usually quite as captivating as a full-band number, Jonathan Rice did pretty well to capture and retain the audience's attention, even going as far as singing his now infamous desert song. The lyrics are as follows:

"We're all stuck out in the desert,
And we're going to di-ie."

Beautiful, innit?

After about five songs, Rice put down his guitar, and here began the 30-minutes wait for Matt Costa. Let me point out for entertainment's sake that the Musiqueplus cameraman chose to arrive about 5 minutes before Matt Costa actually hit the stage, and that as a result he was running back and forth and being generally in the way for those seated, fetching someone to fix his apparent sound troubles, only to pack up and leave about twenty minutes into the set.

Now, onto the main course.

A California native, Matt Costa's music is like pure sunshine. Overall, I found this performance to be very much of a feel-good, with the music being very uplifting and positive, and the lights so bright and colorful. He played a bunch of songs from his first record, "Songs We Sing", like "Sweet Rose", "Yellow Taxi", "Behind the Moon" and "Sunshine", as well as "Mr Pitiful" and "Emergency Call" from his new album "Unfamiliar Faces".

I can't stop listening to "Behind the Moon" and "Lilacs". I can honestly say that out of all those singer/songwriters out there, Matt Costa is now one of my favorites.
