Born Ruffians @ Casa del Popolo

Opening the show in the beautifully small Casa del Popolo was Young Rivals, described as a rock band with the subtlety of The Zombies and the brashness of Arctic Monkeys. I was pleased with how they sounded, reminding me at times a little like the Black Lips.( which is a good thing) The Hamilton, Ontario 4 piece band were calm and cool while they warmed up a busy crowd who all were balancing chips and beer while moving their hips. As I was informed, the bar now licensed as a restaurant requires most to order a side of nacho chips. A cheap price for an intimate show I suppose. The last time I saw these guys was when they did a tour with Caribou last fall rolling in for POP Montreal. They were interesting but I knew little of them. So for this show I prepared and got my hands on the album a few weeks before the show. I was very excited to hear it live. The set was great, the played all songs from the Red, Yellow & Blue album, which really delivers a splash of color to a vibrant indie soundscape.

The album, titled Red, Yellow, and Blue, is the follow-up to the starter self-titled EP released on XL recordings in 2006 which they sampled a few tracks from that night as well. RYB was produced by the hyper, over-caffeinated Rusty Santos, a boy genius from New York responsible for the recording and mixing of Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs. Possible influences as sounds remind me of bands like Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Pavement, or the Pixies. If any of these bands interest you, it may be natural to fall in love with this happy go lucky sound. They mentioned coming back in the fall. So in that case its a must for you to go see them. I think it was best put by Prefix Magazine

"Their sound doesn’t deconstruct or reconstruct anything; it just kicks some tail."

These guys were featured in an episode of Skins, and they're good! Sounds like it was a cool show!
