Another St. Laurent Saturday (Part 2): Cut, Copy, Post

Velo racing down St. Laurent on a busy Saturday night, I was praying that Aussie’s Cut Copy were still on stage, and that I wouldn’t get rammed by one of the crazy Montreal drivers. I busted into the Cabaret Juste Pour Rire to find something very odd and curious. The crowd was actually moving. In fact they all seemed to be jumping in unison in what seemed to be a form of non-violent moshing.

It appeared that I had entirely missed the opener, Mobius Band from Brooklyn. I didn’t let it get me down because Cut Copy had it going on. Very reminiscent of a (better looking) Hot Chip, but in a smaller trio format, and thus less instrumental (more synthesized), Cut Copy had the Joy Division New wave era Pet Shop Boys and Tears for Fears beats and hooks to make the joint bounce. However, given that I witnessed less than three quarter hours of both the Hot Chip and Cut Copy shows, you don’t have to take my word for it.

In the crowd, strategically placed, was another friend of mine helping me bring you two action-packed concert reviews on another St. Laurent Saturday. A newfound Cut Copy fan, and someone to look out for in future Midnight Poutine posts, Clare kindly donated the following thoughts on the show:

“The great thing about Cut Copy is that they make really good electro-pop. It’s unpretentious, fun music that makes you want to dance. To that end, their show at Cabaret on Saturday was one big exuberant dance party.

The Melbourne-based trio was in full form – dancing on stage and churning out tunes from their latest album, In Ghost Colours, as well as from their previous record. You could see from their performance why they’re number one in Australia – they’re nerdy white dudes who put their heart and soul into synths and cheesy lyrics, all without a hint of irony. They’re well-rehearsed and clearly happy, but humble, about their ever increasing popularity (“last time we played in Montreal there were about ten people in the audience, so thanks for coming!” singer, Dan Whitford, said).

What made their show particularly good was the energy of the crowd on the main floor. People were enthusiastic, excited, but not too drunk. No one pushed too hard (and when they did, guitarist Tim Hoey, called them on it).

During “Hearts on Fire” and “Lights and Music”, the crowd reflected the progression of the songs – starting with a slow sway and working itself up to a frenzied mass of fist-pumping, jumping-up-and-down happiness.”

After all that excitement, I couldn’t go straight to bed. I decided to return to BBQ party, which was still in full swing at 2 am, and tell my Aussie host all about his countrymen’s performance. Oddly enough, my Swedish correspondent had returned to the fest as well recounting the prowess of the Svenska Flickor. I felt a little bit apprehensive (mainly because he’s way bigger than me) informing the Aussie host that, according to my unanimous opinion at least, his country had been defeated in the evening’s Sweden v. Australia St. Laurent Saturday death match. He didn’t seem at all angered or surprised. In fact, he conceded that he preferred Anna Ternheim to Cut Copy. However, no one can deny that the latter provided the better dance party.

I'm not sure, but I think that may be the first MP double review (outside of our work for Pop MTL and other fests).

Well done Goran. And I hope, for everyone on the internet's sake, that the 2nd picture isn't you shakin' yo thang in evening wear.

Well done Britta and Clare. It would not have been possible without them. I'm starting to feel like I'm just the pseudonym through which they make midnight poutine posts. It's like a wierd Fight Club thing.

And no that wasn't me in the pic, unfortunately. For one, the pelvic buldge would have been much smaller. And secondly, everyone knows I can't dress or dance that well.
