Skratch Bastid & the Evolving Odour of Teen Spirit

DJ Skratch Bastid had a case of the late night munchies when I caught up with him last night before his monthly Thursday night Coda Club gig. However, his midnight snack of choice was not curd and apple of earth. Mr. Bastid was craving smoked meat goodness, and fortunately Schwatz’s was still open to supply his needs. As he prepared his delicious sandwich for the application of additional yellow mustard, he turned to me and said, “can you hold my … wait, I’m not going to say that…” referring obviously to his recently acquired famous Schwartz’s vinegar preserved cucumber.

The craving for Montrealaise gastric landmarks is completely understandable, especially when one considers Skratch’s busy travel schedule; “I’ve lived here for four years now, but really it feels like only two.” The dude is always on the go. He recently completed his first UK mini tour that took him through Scotland and Ireland. The British Isles wanted a taste of the real thing after having sniffed him out on Youtube.

He also spent 2 months touring our country with MC Buck 65. His turntables play a vital role in the rapper’s creative process, as well as his live performance. The duo followed Cadence Weapon before a packed house at Le National just over two months ago. Buck 65’s country fried hip-hop was smoothly backed by Bastid’s Skratchin’ and a beautiful nocturnal cityscape scene created by music video director Chris Mills.

Mr. Bastid just finished off a series of east coast shows with a gig at a youth conference in Fredericton. “It’s tricky playing for a bunch of fourteen-year-olds,” he reflected. “I threw on Smells Like Teen Spirit expecting the kids to go crazy,” but to his shock the lack of reaction from the crowd was indicative of their unfamiliarity with the underground track. According to Skratch, the never-ending discovery of new music is essential to success in his trade.

As we walked up St. Laurent with sandwich and pickle in hand, an innocent skateboard-backed new arrival from Nanaimo halted us with a, “hey! Have you guys heard of a Club Coda where Skratch Bastid’s playing tonight?” We ironically grinned at each other before we offered to walk him to the venue. Without knowledge of lui-meme’s presence, the slightly ignorant fan praised the Bastid for a block or two. By the time we reached the Coda, it was Skratch’s turn to rub his hands on the one’s and two’s and work off some of that smoked meat grease.

One of the best things about the Bastid is seeing how much he enjoys himself behind his turntables. In addition to his pumpin’ beats and smooth seamless mixes, his enthusiasm feeds the crowd. You can tell that he loves making people dance, and dance they did. Possibly affected by the opening of the Jazz Fest, and a competing night at the Blue Dog, Coda had space for more bodies. Such space was dominated by cold A/C’ed air that kept bodies moving to Bastid's beats. The night was mostly hip-hop, but this DJ is highly proficient at mixing and scratching on just about anything. So if you’ve never been to Coda on a last Thursday of the month, I strongly urge you to go and shake your bum to one of the best DJ’s that bum can shake to.

Ah! I used to groove to Skratches beats back when he was still Skratch Bastard (as opposed to the bastardized form "Bastid") almost 10 years ago.
I remember him being a totally amazing DJ back then, I can only imagine what type of tricks he has in his record bag these days.

are several bussenises making many items and many of them are very enthusiastic about obtaining the top quality ones with the passage of time. It’s all-natural that the top quality goods like the gucci sneakers, sun shades or totes are very costly where the regular man will certainly find it hard to continue the buying with the passage of time.
